Description

1.

Explain the difference between a manual and dynamic schedule. Describe the advantages of a dynamic schedule? Can some tasks be manual while others are dynamic in the same schedule?

Manual scheduling: Manual scheduling is basically an offline approach where the generation of schedule is carried out manually rather than generating it automatically with the help of technology. This process is very easy to implement and of course changes can be made, but if these changes are made during run-time, threads might miss the deadlines. At the same time, this process is also easy to analyze.

Dynamic Scheduling: Unlike manual scheduling, this dynamic scheduling is an online approach where the generation of schedule is automatic. Here, modifications can be made any time as new schedule will be generated automatically once the changes are recognized. And there is no guarantee that all the deadlines will be met.

Advantages of dynamic scheduling:

a. Cases can be handled easily, even if there is no idea of the dependencies at the compile time.

b. Delays can be tolerated by the processor.

c. Code that is executed on one processor can run on a different processor.

Yes, some tasks can be manually scheduled and the others which are not manually scheduled will use dynamic scheduling and will be automatically scheduled in the same schedule.

2.

Identify the different types of dependencies such as Finish-to-Start (FS) and how these dependencies differ from one another.

There are 4 types of dependencies:

i)

Finish to Start – Successor can start after the Predecessor is finished. For example, first cake is baked and then decorated.

ii)

Start to start – Predecessor must start before the Successor can start. This does not require to start both the tasks at the same time. For example, after the baking of cake starts, making of ice can be started.

iii)

Finish to finish – Predecessor must finish before the Successor can finish. If one of the tasks cannot start until the previous task is not finished finish-to-finish dependency is used. Decorate the cake and deliver the cake.

iv)

Start to finish – Predecessor must start before the Successor can finish. For example, deliver the cake and then bill the customer. Second task can finish any time after the first task is started.

3.

Identify and define two different Cost Types.

There are different types of costs. They are fixed, variable, direct, indirect, and sunk.

Fixed costs: Throughout the whole life cycle of the project, the cost remains the same.

Variable costs: Throughout the life cycle of the project the cost keeps changing.

4.

Explain the four ways you can enter resources into the Resource Sheet in MS Project.

A resource could include anything that is used to complete a project. These are the different ways to enter resource into resource sheet in MS Project:

i)

Adding resources to the project

ii)

Adding enterprise resources to the project: these resources are shared across multiple projects. These are managed by administrator. Project manager adds the resources according to the needs of the project.

iii)

Adding generic enterprise resources to the project: these are to specify staffing requirements for a project.

iv)

Adding non-enterprise generic resources to the project: Other project managers cannot use these in their projects as it is not in the list of resources for whole organization.
