Contemporary Issues in Sport and Athletic Welfare Lecture Notes – Week 4

Sports Ethic:    

Deviance – Going against the norm, Misbehaviour, against the majority, over commitment to the sport to a point where you are willing to be deviant What it means to be a ‘real’ athlete – dedicated to the sport, sacrifice things for the sport, sticking to a certain diet, strive to be the best Culture of risk – Accept pain and play through injury Nothing should get in the way of achievements

4 Norms of sports ethic: (1) Athletes are dedicated to ‘the game’ above everything else (2) Athletes should strive for distinction and perfection (3) Athletes should accept risk and play through pain – culture of risk in sport (4) Athletes should accept no obstacles in the pursuit of possibilities – living the dream Coakley & Pike, 2014; Hughes & Coakley, 1991)

Positive deviance – Commitment beyond the norm to push through injury or other issue Negative deviance – Failure to accept valued systems framed by sports ethic, taking advantage of the system
