Mexican Culture Interview

2

The intercultural interview I had was with someone in my family, which is my mother. My family is Hispanic and some of us were born in the United States and most of us were born in Mexico. I learned a lot from the exchange with my mother after asking these questions, they were very interested, and never in my life, I would learn new things about our culture. Some of the things my mother had said I had already known. I did learn that was had the different name of Hispanic people that were being called different, such as Chicana/Chicano, Latina/Latino, Latinx, another one that can’t remember right off. I learn that my family that was either descended or were born in Mexico or the United States are Chicanas/Chicanos. People, where were born or descended in Brazil or around those areas, are Latinas/Latinos. What got to me more about Hispanics is that Latinx was something I spoke to my mother about that I didn’t know. Latinx is where Hispanic doesn’t consider themselves Latinas/Latinos. The interview I had with my mother with the questions I had to ask was “What do you identify as the most important or distinct practices of your culture? How are gender roles addressed in your culture? How is social power, authority, or social roles in a hierarchy expressed in your culture? In class, we learned that in “honor-oriented societies,” worth comes from one’s role or group membership, and in “justice-oriented societies,” worth comes from what one does or doesn’t do. What is the role of honor/shame in your culture? Are honor/pride and dishonor/shame important concepts in your culture?”. Here are her answers to the questions that were giving to me. She said that we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Day, and we do practice at home than at church like everyone else. I and my family celebrate differently than other Hispanic and have different ways to do our practice in our Hispanic culture. We even have a gender role where the women

stay at home and care for everything while the men go o work and provide for the family. Our Social power, authority, or social roles in our culture is where the men mostly are the boss over everything, so most likely whatever the men said goes. I also learned about honor and justice-oriented societies in my culture. The honor or shame in my culture is criminal activity, for us, Hispanic are about working we don’t want free money to want to work and earn our money every day, this is not for the people like the Cartel, this is meant for the traditional Hispanic. Our honor or pride and our dishonor or shame is not important in our culture because it uses to be at one point, but not anymore as the generation as grown and the concept of pride has changed. The perception I had changed a lot, but it still stays the same as well. My perception I had with the interview was that my mother gave me a lot of facts and how different Hispanic are compared to my family Hispanic. Every Hispanic are different and how they were born and raised. My mother does have a point that generation has changed and it now different, because now we have people in our family that are mix with white, Latin, black, etc. So many things are still going, like where we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the Day of the Dead, etc. We just do different celebrations and other things. My culture did change a lot from everything my mother had spoken to me about. The way I see things in my culture may be different from others, but others may see it as theirs. My culture has a lot of different things where culture might want to learn about. I would think that my culture is not better than anyone else, but we learned to care for anyone and is willing to protect just like any other culture would in their culture. In our culture, we do have our way of being independent, but in our culture, our family has raised this kind of way, which caused us to learn that we can be beggars, we must learn to

work for our money instead of people giving to us. (Moreau, 2014) said, “People from independent, individualistic cultures typically do not understand this practice. Indeed, they value avoiding social debt rather than accumulating it”. My culture was taught to be independent, but also make sure our family or friends are good. Another thing about my family is that we worship Christ, but we worship mostly on the Virgin Mary. “People in honor-oriented cultures expect to use rituals for such things as affirming their social and historic identity, transitioning from one type of status to another, and reminding them of who they are and how they are expected to properly relate to others” (Moreau, 2014). I have family who does rituals and things like that. My grandmother is a witch doctor, and she does this ritual, she is not just a witch doctor, but she can do more than just these types of rituals. Another thing about my culture was the education in our culture. In Mexico, children are not able to go to school because they must go to work before education to support their families. These are things children do not have a choice to do. Education is a big thing, but in our culture, parents are not able to pay for it because sometimes in school there you must pay for everything including the informs and all. (Hofstede, 1986) said that education is an important thing for students and teachers. This allows giving children the best education. In Conclusion, my culture and the interview I gave my mother was amazing because I was able to learn a lot when it came to my culture. I pretty much learn the same thing that my mom told me when I was a child but learning these new things about what kind of Hispanic, I am and what were did and how it changes from the past and now. Culture is a big thing in my family because we have so many traditions that I am still
