CIVL2340: Introduction to Structural Design Tutorial exercises week 6
Question 1 A simply supported beam AB is subjected to a 40kN point load at mid-span as shown in Figure 1. The beam section is 360UB44.7 of Grade 300 steel. The two end supports at A and B, and the load point at C, all have lateral and twisting restraints. 1)
Calculate the Nominal Section Capacity, 𝑀𝑠 ;
2)
Calculate the Reference Buckling Moment, 𝑀𝑜 ;
3)
Calculate the Nominal Member Moment Capacity, 𝑀𝑏 ;
4)
Calculate the Design Bending Moment, 𝑀 ∗ ;
5)
Check if the beam AB has adequate strength to carry the 40 kN point load.

Question 2 (Exam 2017) A 11m long 310UB40.4 Grade 300 steel beam ABC is pin-supported at A and B and has a 2m cantilever over-hang BC, as shown in Figure 2. A point load is applied at the bottom flange at end C. Supports at A and B have full lateral and twisting restraints. Determine the design load P*.
