Description

Indiana State University BIO 112: Human Aspects in Biology GMO Worksheet Week 7 Due Date: 11:59 p.m. on Friday, February 28th, 2020 Point Value: 10 points 1. Define the term gene expression. Gene expression is regulating the amount of protein produced by a cell. 2. How is messenger RNA (mRNA) synthesized during the process of transcription? mRNA is synthesized in the nucleus using the nucleotide sequence of DNA as a template. 3. Outline the process of cloning a gene using bacteria. You cut open the plasmid and paste it into the gene. Then, you instead the plasmid into the bacteria. Finally, grow up lots of plasmid-carrying bacteria and use them to make protein.

4. How are plants genetically modified? Plants are modified by using a device called a gene gun which shoots metal coated pellets covered with foreign DNA into plant cells. 5. How are animal cells genetically modified? Animal cells are modified by biological pharming which produces drugs that are used to treat or prevent disease.

6. What are some of the environmental concerns about genetically modified crops? One environmental concern about theses is that they grow new weeds that out cross with wild relatives which make them wild themselves, these may harm us in the long run. 7. How can CRISPR be used to modify an organism’s genome? CRISPR can be used by naturally occurring part of a bacterium’s immune system.

8. What are stem cells and what could they be used for? Stem cells are cells that can divide indefinitely and can differentiate into other cell types. These are used to replace damaged cells by chemotherapy or disease. 9. What does gene therapy involve? Gene therapy involves the genes inside body cells in an effort to treat and/or stop disease.

10. What could gene editing be used for?

Gene editing could be used to engineer tumor cells that are tested in the lab to determine the efficacy of cancer treatments and a way to remove HIV from a human body....
