Whale Rider Essay Niki Caro’s 2002 film Whale Rider is a film about a people in crisis. The Maoris, like other indigenous peoples in the world, are struggling to find a role for themselves in a modern white dominated society. The film’s theme suggests that while it is important to connect with one’s history and traditions, it is also important to be flexible in thinking about this history and tradition. Koro, the Maori chief, becomes of central importance when exploring this theme. Koro must come to see that his Maori tribe needs the best leader to take them into the future, and this leader might not necessarily be male. The gender barrier in his head needs to be crossed. Tradition must continue as one chief hands his title onto the next chief; but, changed thinking about gender roles needs to help his Maori people survive in a new and changing world.
