What nursing means to me

I do not believe that I chose nursing as a profession, but rather that nursing chose me. For as long as I can remember, being a nurse and caring for God's people was all I wanted to do. I have always been very drawn to the profession; since I was a young girl working as a CNA in my hometown, Long Term Care, and hospital. For me, watching the nurses that cared for my Mom when she had cancer was when I decided to pursue nursing as a profession. Those nurses were my heroes. What an amazing profession one that has nothing to do with a paycheck for me but rather a career I can be proud of.

I believe that as a nurse, I always need to be patient-focused. I believe it is my job to care for the whole patient mind, body, and soul and that I will do this with compassion and care and knowledge. I also believe that I must care for my personal well being so that I can care for my patients. As a nurse, I have a responsibility to my patients to provide patient-centered holistic care. Patients are not just charts in a computer but rather people; they are individuals that deserve 100% of my time and care. It is my job to help my patients be the best they can be and help them improve their lives and health no matter what their situation may be. It is my job to educate my patients and their families on all things related to their current health, in other words, by educating them in the treatments available, and lifestyle changes to help that would help them improve their outcomes. As I go on this journey, I need to strive to have healthy behaviors in my own life so that I can provide the best care possible to my patients. I don't stop being a nurse at the end of my

2 shift; therefore, if my patients see me in our community, I want them to respect the choices I make in my personal time as well as in my work time. My values as a person are kindness, honesty, integrity, and constant learning and growth. I always carry my personal and professional values with me, and to me, this is one strength that will help me be a well-rounded nurse.

Nurses commit not only to our patients but also to our selves to make sure that our skills and knowledge are accurate. I can do this through education as well as taking the time to take part in in-services. Being a nurse means I am a life long learner.

As a nurse, I must have compassion and understanding. I always need to remember to be patient, kind, and respectful to my patients and their families. I need to be able to care for others no matter what their culture or lifestyle. I must always remember to give others a sense of dignity and self-worth. I am a nurse and very proud of my profession.

“It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love is put in the giving.” Mother Theresa
