The Nurse Practice Act (NPA) is a set of laws that define the scope of nursing practice in each state. NPAs safeguard the public's health, protection, and well-being. This involves safeguarding the public from unqualified and dangerous nurses. Nursing practice is regulated by statutory law in each state, which determines the scope of practice and establishes disciplinary procedures. This federal law is overseen by local nursing boards (The State of New Jersey, 2017). They have the power and duty to safeguard the public by deciding who is eligible to practice nursing. In some states, such as New Jersey, nurse practice acts go by different names or are paired with the control of other occupations. The mission of the Board of Nursing is to protect the health and safety of New Jersey residents. Nurses are licensed by the Board to provide safe and professional nursing care. The Board is dedicated to constructive regulation by training nurses about how to make decisions that promote healthy nursing practice, such as Registered Nurse decisions to assign certain nursing duties to Licensed Practical Nurses and other ancillary nursing staff (New Jersey State Nurses Association, 2010).

What did you learn that you didn't know before today? One thing I have learned is that advanced practice nurses, sexual harassment forensic nurses, and licensed homemaker-home health aides are also certified by the commission. The board recommends clinical affiliates and accredits nursing schools. Another thing that I have learned is that individuals who try to hold themselves out as licensed after being administratively suspended are considered to have violated N.J.A.C. 13:37-5.1, even though they have not obtained a notice of suspension at the address on file with the Board (The State of New Jersey, 2017). A licensed skilled nurse should not assign the performance of nursing tasks to individuals who have not received proper training and education. The Nurse Practice Act's expertise helps nursing leaders in delivering high-quality patient care and ensuring patient safety. The board ensures that nurses are eligible. Nursing competence is described as the ability to combine one's nursing abilities, talent, values, beliefs, and experience. The Nurse Practice Act establishes the duties and obligations of nurse leaders in order to facilitate professional clinical care and prevent malpractice.
