What is a Cannabis strain or cultivar? Do the strains or cultivars of Cannabis differ in terms of their medicinal attributes?

There are an abundance of strains flowing throughout the cannabis market, however there are only 3 distinct species, of which 2 are primarily used for recreational and medicinal purposes. The strains commonly cultivated include Cannabis Sativa L. and Cannabis Indica Lam., from these species there comes a wide selection of strains. Strains can be a straight derivative of just one of the plant species or it may be a hybrid of both. The difference between strains is simply the combination and abundance of different cannabinoids produced from the plant being cultivated. Individual strains may have high concentrations of the cannabinoid THC(Tetrahydrocannabinol) while having a low amount of CBD (Cannabidiol)or may contain the opposite, with higher levels of CBD and lower levels of CBD. Higher levels of THC enable psychoactive effects which is

desirable both for users wanting medicinal and recreation uses. These psychoactive effects typically include feelings of euphoria and happiness, with some strains having effects of increased creativity, aiding with sleep, helping to battle anxiety and many more. Strains which have a higher CBD content are typically used to control symptoms of pain and aid with mental issues. The popularity of different strains varies between individual users and their purposes for consuming cannabis. There is an abundance of strains simply used for recreational use, these would be strains that have higher levels of THC than CBD. This would bring about and experience of happiness and euphoria for consumers, with some consumers this may also aid with depression and other mental illnesses. Consumers who use cannabis for its medicinal properties may lean more towards strains which have a higher CBD content. CBD is known to help with many neurological and physical ailments, while also having a counteractive affect to THC. This will help individuals who are in need of the healing benefits of cannabis while not wanting to experience a ‘high’ feeling. Before strains were

specifically bred for medicinal purposes strains were locked in place by geographical means. This is where some of the first strains originated from. Having different variation amongst cannabinoid levels between Cannabis Sativa plants of various geographical areas (ex. Russia, China, Mexico, United States). In conclusion there are only two primary species of cannabis that are used within the industry (Cannabis Sativa L. and Cannabis Indica Lam.), from these species there is a legion of strains ranging in levels of both THC and CBD as well as many other collections of cannabinoids.
