Description

Which of the four characteristics of cooperative verbal communication do you believe is most often violated in conversations that you have experienced? Can you provide an example.

Although a lot of communication is spread through nonverbal cues, verbal language also has a large impact as well. Language, in general, has many rules that control its function but one main way to ensure communication is received from both sides is by incorporating cooperative verbal communication. This means that one is producing understandable messages that are informative, honest, relevant, and clear. However, these principles of cooperative verbal communication may not always be used in every conversation. I believe that in most everyday conversations the characteristic of verbal cooperative communication that is violated is being relevant. I believe that this is the most violated characteristic because on many occasions, the conversations that I have with another do not always include this tool. For instance, one of my close friends at school almost never stays on topic. We could be talking about an exam we have tomorrow and how stressed we all are, while she decides to then show us a Facebook post about a girl she knew from high school. She even admits that she strays away from the relevant topic at hand and tries to change that about herself. She says that she has a lot of trouble focusing on one idea when something else pops into her head. However, this does not only happen with her. This is typical occurrence when it comes to conversations I have with other people as well. I think sometimes this is violated because there might be times when people just do not care about the topic or want to switch the topic to something else not related. It is not always a bad thing especially if it is an emergency and the topic of relevance needs to be changed. Yet, this can still be a problem if you want to talk to someone about something serious but they can just never stay on topic....
