Victoria Stitt CWV-101 Professor Jenkins 11/01/20 CLC: Who do you say Jesus is? In Matthew 5:21-24, Jesus wanted to teach the people how sinful murder is and how anger as well as murder will lead to judgement by others. He wanted them to know how cursing, murder and anger can bring danger to them and can be brought to the court. He was warning them to be careful of those sinful actions people may attempt. Cursing shall take one to the fires of hell when they pass. Jesus wanted the people to not be sinful and contain their anger at themselves or with another person as it can bring them to hell. By not complying to these actions, a person would not be following the path of God. Jesus taught the people to fix their sinful actions that had been made that affected another individual before making a sacrifice to God. “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.” (Matthew 5:21-24). Someone from atheistic or pantheistic views may see the concepts of the verse not as caring about what is said, unlike Christians, meaning an atheist or pantheist would not feel as guilty as a Christian when committing a sin like cursing at an individual as atheists and pantheists do not believe there is a hell. For example, in the verse it states, “And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.” (Matthew 5:21-24) meaning any person

cursing to another is subject to be in danger and will suffer in hell. Atheists and pantheists believe that words are simply words and cursing will not bring them to hell. In Matthew 5:21-24, Jesus taught the people about the consequences of sinning whether it is from murder, cursing or anything of the sort. He expressed being angry with another person is a sin no matter how innocent or horrible the action is. All sins are subject to judgement in the eyes of the lord. This reveals how Jesus wants peace and goodness among the people as he cares about every individual. Jesus has a special relationship with God’s will and wanted to fulfil his purposes. His righteousness brings a great relationship with God and all creation. He taught them righteousness in Matthew 5:24 when he said, “First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.” (Matthew 5:24). Jesus wanted the people to be righteous to keep relationships great and if they were not he wanted the people to fix the problem and be healed. This reveals Jesus believed it was right to fix relationship problems personally rather than legally considering a relationship will not be as strong if the situation were to be handled legally. The legal route will not make us complete. Jesus wanted the people to understand that “getting even” is not righteous nor is it fulfilling God’s purposes. In John 10:25-38, Jesus’s Jewish opponents are upon him in disbelief. They do not believe that Jesus is who he says he is. Jesus tells his opponents that his father and him are one. He tries to explain to them that his people follow him and believe he is who he says he is. His purpose was to be sent to the world by his father. He offers to show them his power even if they do not believe him. “But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” (John 10:38). When Jesus asked, “But who do you say that I am” (Mark 8:29), Peter responded, “You are the Messiah.” I would personally respond to his question by asking him his story and why he

was meant to be here. I believe that he is the Messiah although I would want to understand why from his point of view. I believe in Jesus, but I do not understand how one can rise from the dead and cure people. I know that God is on my side although our relationship is not as strong as others. This exercise changed the way I imagine Jesus in my mind and helped me understand how righteousness he was. It was unfortunate the Jewish opponents did not believe him. Understanding the verses, I wrote about helped me feel more empathy towards him and how grateful I am for his sacrifice. I did not realize Jesus was so caring towards every single human being. I am glad I got to write about verses that impacted the way I view Jesus.
