Sean Michael Campbell Professor Dumars English 101 Why Do We Create Monsters? 22 June 2020

Why Do We Create Monsters? We live in a world filled with terrorists, mentally ill people or world leaders capable of committing unthinkable acts toward innocent people. This certainly allows the idea of fictional monsters to be created almost daily. Terrorist’s organization trying to succeed in world domination by carrying out unimaginable acts like 9/11. Dictators trying to control countries through fear and brutal force, individuals capable of destroying communities because their own lives are unbearable to live. Due to this corruption and violence, the human race is subjected to cruel and evil-minded people like the ones we see every time we switch on the news or browse the Internet. King argues that the horror movie preforms a helpful task, taking on feelings, urges that don’t fit neatly into the rational, reasonable and sane part of our lives. (King). Our world is filled with real life monsters so the idea of fictional monsters like vampires or zombies who kill with no remorse is no so far fetched. Therefore, I believe creating fictional monsters is a response to all the horrific actions we see in the world around us. Whether it is the vampire, the

Zombie, the werewolf, Frankenstein creature or some other being of a mystical character, the twenty-first century does not seem to lack for monsters. (Hoffman) Certain leaders of our world wish to only see their own race and cultural flourish while everyone else plunders. Their actions are only driven by world domination of all, while other species are simply standing in the way of achieving that goal. For example, zombies run around looking to turn every human into one of their own, they only kill for one particular reason with no emotion behind it. They do not kill because they are starving and need to replenish nutrients to survive; they kill so that the only race left in this world would be the zombie race. There’s no emotion behind the action of zombies, no emptiness that needs to be filled because the zombie race only wishes for the rest of the world to be the same; Zombies. In my opinion, resemble many dictators of the past and present. I’m not certain that the original creator had this concept in mind, but when I reflect on my knowledge of history and that of world leaders who only had one main goal in mind, to force everyone else to be exactly like them. Again, a simple bite from one of these death-like creatures turn a person into the walking dead, one of them. After all, nothing can stop them in trying to achieve this task. Luckily for us, zombies are only fictional creatures. There’s no one in this world that would be successful in accomplishing that goal. Many have tried and all have failed with the exact opposite happening, demolishing him or her or even their own race.

However, trying to succeed in world domination by depleting all others seems highly unlikely but yet people still set their minds in obtaining this outlandish idea. On the other hand, vampires carry many similar characteristics to some of our world leaders with a few added bonuses. Now vampires simultaneously occur in all forms and tap into our very need; soap opera storylines, sexual liberation, noir detective fiction, etc. (Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan). So, not only vampires share the same goal of overtaking the world population and transforming each person into the undead, they have the ability of showing human-like emotions. In addition, vampires are capable of blending in with society but on a moments notice turning into devilish like demons with only one goal in mind. Over time the vampire theme has slowly but surely adapted to attract a new audience with added features, still sticking to its roots like Feeding on innocent bystanders to quench there thirst for blood which ultimately keeps them alive. Surely, it comes as a surprise that there are so few of these monsters on the silver screen. Now, with so many different examples to compare it seems our movies or novels should be exploding with the creation of new monsters on a monthly basis. Anyway, The shock and awe that we see all around the globe is nothing less than monstrous. And, not more then a few weeks can go by before the world is sent into a spiral with some new devastating tragedy happening. I honestly can’t remember the last time I observed the news and it actually reported a decent, uplifting story. Hoffman, A. Monsters, A Bedford Spotlight Reader. Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2019...
