If you get stuck, just come back to the fundamental question: "What is happening in this picture? What do I see that makes me say that?"

At first glance I see a blonde woman, in her underwear, on a ladder, desperately trying to catch her baby who is also only in his underwear. But, when I look more closely I can see many different details that stand out. There are multiple colors shown in this painting such as the green in the leaves, yellow throughout the image and in their hair, black, brown and white all used in the tree, and the light blue in the stars. This painting is very detailed until it gets up to the leaves on the tree, then the branches and the leaves blur into the night. One detailed element is texture. This is used in both the mother and son’s bodies and their blonde hair that has so many wavy detailed lines in it. The tree is also very textured, If you look where the ladder is placed, you can see all of the lines and details on the tree. This image takes place at night, so most of the background is dark, but there is a light source in the upper left hand corner where the stars shine through the leaves and the space between the leaves. It is the only place where there is lightness in the background. There is a lot of emphasis on the upper half of the mother and the son, as they are the lightest part of the picture. Since we are so focused on the foreground, the image looks flat at first sight, but then when looking at it a little deeper you realize there is a lot of depth with the branches and leaves being, as I stated before, blurred out. Also, because the stars are so little, yet shining so bright, it gives a sense of scale. One last principle this painting includes is movement. Movement is shown with the son falling from the tree and the mom trying to catch him. This painting is very mysterious because it makes me question how there is so much light at night with few stars shining through, why is the baby in the tree and lastly, why are both the baby and the mother only in their undergarments? I am not exactly sure what this image means, but I think it could symbolize a mother trying to help her son while he is “falling” in aspects of his real life. I also think that neither of them wearing clothing could symbolize vulnerability or the need for help.
