Description

The Cygnet sailed from Indonesia to northwest Australia and in 1688 it stayed in the area now called Cygnet Bay because they needed to clean the bottom of the ship. Then in 1699 Dampier went on a second voyage to Australia. Dampier’s first voyage to Australia was when he was a passenger on a ship called the Cygnet. He thought that Australia was quite a dry and uninviting place. He visited Australia during two separate voyages. While staying in the Cygnet Bay area, Dampier observed the plants, animals and Aboriginal people. William Dampier (1651–1715) was the first Englishman to make a detailed record of a visit to Australia. He came to the west coast of Australia across the Indian Ocean in a ship called the Roebuck, and he carefully mapped much of the west coast from Shark Bay to Roebuck Bay. After his first voyage, Dampier returned to England and wrote a book about his travels which made him famous....
