Organizational Climate at Wegman’s

Privately owned supermarket chain Wegman’s is celebrating 19 years on the Fortune Magazine top companies list, this year ranking a stunning number 4. CEO Danny Wegman shared his thoughts on the recognition: “When our people feel cared about and respected, they turn around and make our customers feel that way too. A big thank you goes to our customers and employees, because together they make Wegmans a happy place to be.” (Wegman, 2016). This kind of success does not come by accident, it comes by encouraging positive organizational behavior, and practicing it at all levels of the organization. As we began this research, the opening statement on the careers page reads: “At Wegmans, we enjoy coming to work every day. We think you will, too. Here, you'll be surrounded by a family of people who truly care about each other. It's no wonder Wegmans has been on the FORTUNE Magazine list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For®" since 1998.” (wegmans.com, 2016). This demonstrates a positive deviance effect in both the longevity of the accomplishment, and the huge success of being the highest ranked retailer this year. They exhibit pro-social behaviors in their generosity to give to food banks in the communities surrounding their stores. “One of our values is making a difference in every community we serve, and we’re thankful for our customers and employees who so generously share that commitment,” (Forkell, 2016). At Wegman’s they donate day-old bread, not –quiteperfect produce or yogurt that is close to day old. Wegman’s donates these daily to over 300 local food banks, food pantries and soup kitchens near their stores. In 2014 Wegman’s donated 13.5 million pounds of food (337 tractor trailer loads) to local food banks and food pantries (“Wegmans”, 2016). In researching their career site, an example of conscious capitalism jumped out in every job description: we “maintain and encourage two-way communication by reaching out and

getting to know all employees” (wegmans.taleo.net, 2016). Conscious capitalism makes the higher purpose and value for the community stakeholder at the core of every decision, meaning they take in account of everyone. That is why Wegmans is a great candidate for conscious capitalism because they know that it is not all about money but their employees and the community. Also demonstrated in their values statement is the amplifying effect of positive practices. They make it clear that they “work hands-on with employees to teach, encourage, and empower them to take on new responsibilities while utilizing training and career development planning tools to monitor progress” (wegmans.taleo.net, 2016). This gives employees a sense of purpose and something to work harder for. Wegmans takes good care of its full time and part time employees. Wegmans has employee appreciation week to show their employees how much they mean to them. In the end the more satisfied the employees are, the better they will treat the customers. Taking pride in their customers experience shows just how well Wegmans appreciate their employees. By providing a FAQ detailed list via their website has proven that they are transparent with their available services as well as providing healthy eating tips and strategies to ensure that each customer has access to shopping for the exact items of which they want to feed their families. Their eat well live well motto alongside their Wegmans Opinion Panel, a panel that customers can decide to participate in and discuss their healthy eating habits and concerns regarding their experience while shopping. Wegmans believes in making a difference in each and every community it serves, respect for their customers choice of shopping selections, caring about the health and wellbeing of everyone the business comes across or conducts business with. So, there is no one single special

group, skin color, religious belief or customer preference. It is highly recommended to visit a local Wegmans near you and check it out for yourself. The diversity in employees will be as diverse as the consumers that shop at Wegmans.
