Description

Module 2 Worksheet Water and Life Learning Objectives. This activity will help you model and describe the chemistry of water and how water facilitates life on earth. (10 points) Instructions. Answer the questions below. When you’re finished, upload your assignment into Blackboard as a .docx or .pdf (no .pages because I can’t view those). Drawings can be done in many different ways (examples: using the features in Word or PowerPoints, using the Paint app on your computer and drawing with your mouse or touchpad, taking a picture of a hand-drawing and pasting that into the box below, or using a stylus/touch screen to draw in the structures. Pasted images taken from online will not be accepted. 1. Draw one water molecule. Be sure to    

label the atoms present show the bonds present between the atoms show the shape of the molecule define any symbols you may use

O---- OXYGEN H ------ HYDROGEN Dots are atoms present Dashed lines are the bonds

2. For the bonds you drew between the atoms of one water molecule (above), what type of bonds are these? Circle all that apply from the list below.  Covalent

3. Provide a description, in your own words, for the bond(s) you circled (in question 2).

A chemical bond that involves sharing a pair of

electrons between atoms in a molecule A weak chemical bond formed when the slightly positive hydrogen atom of a polar covalent bond in one molecule is attracted to the slightly negative atom of a polar covalent bond in another molecule.

Chemical bonding that results from the electrical attraction between cations and anions a covalent bond in which the bonding electrons are shared equally by the bonded atoms which results in a balanced distribution of electrical charge A covalent bond between atoms that differ in electronegativity. The shared electrons are pulled closer to the more electronegative atom, making it slightly negative and the other atom slightly positive.

4. List the four main emergent properties of water that contribute to life on earth. a. Cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension.________________________________________________________________ b. Moderate temperature________________________________________________________________ c. Solid ice floats on liquid________________________________________________________________ d. e. Versatile solvent________________________________________________________________

5. Hydrogen interactions among water molecules are what facilitate the emergent properties of water. Draw one center water molecules and all of the water molecules which interact with that center water molecule. Be sure to     

label the atoms present in each water molecule show and label the bonds present between the atoms show and label all of the hydrogen interactions present between the atoms of center water molecules and all of the other water molecules show the shape of the molecules define any symbols you may use

hydrogen interactions

O---- OXYGEN H ------ HYDROGEN Dots are atoms present. Dashed lines are the bonds. D minus are partial negative charges and d plus are partial positive charges.

6. In your own words, define hydrogen interaction. Hydrogen interactions are when an electronegative atom covalently bonded to an hydrogen atom is attracted to another electronegative atom

7. Define hydrogen interactions specifically for between atoms of water molecules. 3 WS 2-Water, BIOS 208, Dr. Bergan-Roller, Spring 2021 Online

Water molecules are attracted to each other by partial negative and positive charges on the oxygen and hydrogen atoms. In water two hydrogen atoms are bonded to one oxygen molecule.

8. Describe the role of electrons in facilitating hydrogen interactions. Electrons are attracted by atoms and this brings about electronegativity which plays a major role in hydrogen interactions. 9. For each of the emergent properties of water a. describe what water does to facilitate this property (be sure to talk about the hydrogen interactions here), b. describe how that property facilitates to life on earth, and c. draw how hydrogen interactions are involved in each property by illustrating what you wrote in parts a and b. a. Describe what water does to facilitate this property and how hydrogen interactions are involved: water molecules stick together, causes an attraction between different substances and due to hydrogen interaction water has a high surface tension.

b. Describe how this property facilitates life on Earth (i.e., how is this property important for life on Earth?): cohesion helps transport water against gravity in plants. adhesion causes attraction water and plant cells surface tension causes water to be less permeable.

c. Illustrate how hydrogen interactions are involved in this property by showing what you described in parts a and b above: cohesion

adhesion

Property 1: cohesion, adhesion and surface tension________________________________________________________________ 4 WS 2-Water, BIOS 208, Dr. Bergan-Roller, Spring 2021 Online

Property 2: Moderate temperature________________________________________________________________ a. Describe what water does to facilitate this property and how hydrogen interactions are involved: heat is absorbed when hydrogen bonds break and heat is released when hydrogen bonds form

b. Describe how this property facilitates life on Earth (i.e., how is this property important for life on Earth?) water absorbs and releases warmer and cooler air respectively to regulate temperature.

c. Illustrate how hydrogen interactions are involved in this property by showing what you described in parts a and b above:

Property 3: solid ice floats on liquid water________________________________________________________________ a. Describe what water does to facilitate this property and how hydrogen interactions are involved: ice floats in liquid water because hydrogen interactions in ice are more ordered making ice less dense than water

b. Describe how this property facilitates life on Earth (i.e., how is this property important for life on Earth?) if ice sank, all bodies of water would be solid and that would lead to nonexistence of earth.

c. Illustrate how hydrogen interactions are involved in this property by showing what you described in parts a and b above hydrogen bond 5 WS 2-Water, BIOS 208, Dr. Bergan-Roller, Spring 2021 Online

Property 4:________________________________________________________________ a. Describe what water does to facilitate this property and how hydrogen interactions are involved: due to waters partially charged areas, it causes it to interact with solute and therefore dissolve them.

b. Describe how this property facilitates life on Earth (i.e., how is this property important for life on Earth?) water is a universal solvent, can dissolve sugar, salt and all other solutes.

c. Illustrate how hydrogen interactions are involved in this property by showing what you described in parts a and b above
