Question 2 Donkeys and horses can mate and produce mules, which are infertile. Using the biological species concept, explain whether horses and donkeys are the same species or not. Question 3
The key to BSC is reproductive isolation. Can you separate these cases into prezygotic or postzygotic mechanisms? What do the postzygotic have in common? Temporal isolation Hybrid inviability Gamete isolation Hybrid sterility Behavioral isolation Mechanistic isolation Hybrid breakdown Habitat isolation Mating seasons
Answer: Prezygotic : temporal isolation, gamete isolation, behavioral isolation, mechanistic isolation, habitat isolation, mating seasons. Postzygotic: Hybrid inviability, hybrid sterility, hybrid breakdown
Question 4 Ratites contain flightless birds on many continents, such as Ostrich, Emu, Kiwi and more. If they share a common ancestor, how do you think they evolved on different continents?
