Arielle Saida 11/19/19 Dr. Pellegrini English 101 Expression of Your True Self In Jenna Wortham’s article, “How I Learned to Love Snapchat,” she tells us how Snapchat is a way to regain meaning in the digitalized world. She explains, “text barely even captures a fraction of the emotional depth and texture… Snapchat is just the latest and most wellrealized example of the various ways we are regaining the layers of meaning that we lost when we began digitizing” (475). I can say that from experience, I like using Snapchat much more than texting. Snapchat lets you send more personal things where you can show your expressions or send live videos back and forth. It lets you express yourself instead of sitting behind a screen “panicking if [the oblong gray bubble (typing awareness indicator)] appears then disappears” (475). I have always found myself able to express myself more through Snapchat, sending everyone personalized Snapchats. Wortham was right when she said that “Snapchat isn’t the place you go to be pretty. It’s the place you go to be yourself” (478). I find myself less scared to be myself and send embarrassing pictures. The comfort of disappearing Snaps is one of the most appealing features. Its disappearing feature gives you a sense of comfort because if you want to send an unflattering picture of yourself, the person who you send it to doesn’t keep the picture unless they screenshot. Another appealing feature of Snapchat includes the ability to take pictures or short videos throughout your day and share them with friends and/or family. Whenever I travel, for example when I went to Spain this past summer, I uploaded pictures and

videos throughout my entire trip so all my friends could experience some of the beautiful views I was seeing as well. Snapchat gives you an outlet to put videos or images of beautiful places you visit, funny videos you take with friends, etc. Overall, I know I will continue using Snapchat, loving the way I feel like messages are so personalized and transparent in a sense....
