Description

Dr. David Leondard’s guest lecture was extremely interesting. His perspective on racism in sports is very similar to what I think many other white people, especially white men’s perspective is. The way he explained that he had always looked at sports as just being something fun and part of our daily lives, without thinking about how it is impacted by society is so common. It is a huge privilege to be able to watch sports and not think at all about the way that race, gender, and much more impacts the game. This relates to what we have read this week because many people, including Dr. David Leonard, have the view of “The Great Sport Myth” where people have society and it’s issues separate from the world of sports. I think that one of the most important takeaways from Dr. Leonards lecture is how this research can also impact and relate to so much more. He is using his education to write about gun violence in the media. While this may seem very different from societal issues in sports, I believe that it can all connect. Media influences and creates many issues in society involving sports and also has an impact in relation to gun violence. Gun violence also has a relationship to race because of many stereotypes within the category of gun violence. His education and research has given him such an interesting perspective on all of these things in relation to one another. One last part of his lecture that I thought was really impressive was his explanation of how he feels like his research is sort of a bridge between sports and societal issues. I think that he is doing a very great job of bringing racism to the eyes of those who are sports lovers but may not understand how racism plays a role in sports. He also discussed how using sports to open people’s eyes to racism can be a gateway to understanding how racism and other societal issues are impacted by other things like education and politics....
