Taylor Javey Assignment 1 Professor Powe 5/15/2018 Local Environmental Health Concerns Growing up as a child I never liked bees due to their bad reputation of painful stings. I never knew that the world around me would suffer more due to the dying population of bees. My greatest environmental health concern that is present in my community is the bee population. Bees are directly related to our food supply, so the loss of bees can destroy various contributions to foods we eat. According to Environment Ohio, “We rely on bees to pollinate 71 of the 100 crops that provide 90% of most of the world’s food.” The loss of the bee population could destroy the human population because of their significance to our survival. According to Environment Ohio, ” In recent years, beekeepers report they’re losing on average 30% of all honeybee colonies each winter — twice the loss considered economically tolerable.” If beekeepers continue to lose an average of thirty percent or higher of bees the world we live in is doomed. The loss of bees has several contributions some of which are, global warming and beekilling insecticides. In order to save the battle of the dying bee population we need everyone to get involved. Anyone eligible to vote should vote against any law of insecticides to save not only the bees but to save the human population as well! Another solution would be to plant a beefriendly garden. A bee-friendly garden would help contribute to help pollinators and feed bees. According to the local newspaper from December of 2017, Robert Yosay is among one of many citizens in the area who is fighting to keep the bee population alive. Robert is a local bee

hobbyist who sells beeswax and honey products at the annual canfield fair. “… these local hobbyists sell beeswax and honey products, keep the bee population intact and are always at the Canfield Fair” (Vindy December 2017). More people should strive to continue the legacy of Mr.Yosay and other beekeepers. Another environmental health concern that is present in my community is toxins and waste. Toxin waste companies can possibly use the same injection wells for decades which can result in human induced earthquakes, and contamination of groundwater and surface water. This can cause a result of toxic waste leaking out in to the earth layers as the injections are being pumped down. Also, the cement cap that is used for plugging the wells are eventually deemed for failure and some wells do not even use a cement cap in the first place according to Longreads. In March of this year Youngstown issued a water-boil alert to its residents. According to the local vindicator, “the boil alert for water used for drinking and cooking recommended Friday by the Youngstown Water Department for areas of Youngstown’s West Side and Austintown’s East Side remained in effect Saturday, according to the Austintown Police Department.” The Youngstown water department issued a water-boil alert March 10, 2018 at 9:47 pm and would notify the residents when the water was eventually able to use with out boiling. I specifically remember this water-boil alert because it was around my nephew’s first birthday. My sister was very concerned and did not use any water that was not boiled for several weeks following the lift of the waterboil alert for safety precautions for her son. The quote "Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children,” means to me that we should always respect the earth. It also, means that when we do

respect the earth it directly associated in our child’s life, so we should want to respect the earth for the benefit of them.
