Summary

A brief guide on how to write an analytical essay conclusion - it could be used for any text or film....

Description

Conclusions… a tricky but very important finale.

The conclusion is a succinct analysis of: 1) The most important point of the essay topic (and your contention) 2) The ultimate message of a text in terms of the essay topic. (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT – it is not what is the ultimate message about the text but rather in relation to the essay topic, what is the message!!)

One way to do this is to answer a selection of the questions below. A good starting point is to restate your contention; follow it with a version of your topic sentences (chuck in some synonyms for good measure) and then answer a few of these questions… You might also just choose to answer some of the questions and embed the insights and analysis that you’ve done into them.

Questions… Choose 2-3 which are the most relevant to your essay and the topic. DO NOT ANSWER THEM ALL! What is the message for the viewers at the time? What is the message for viewers today? What did Hitchcock ultimately want us to know or think about? What implication of this text are there in society? How does this film explore the complexities of society? Why is the film still relevant? What bigger picture can we focus on? How has the essay topic drawn a focus into a certain aspect of the film? What viewpoint does Hitchcock want his characters to take? What viewpoint does Hitchcock want audiences to take?...
