Summary

never too little and never to late to learn about women...

Description

1. Sex- Sex largely thought as a biological distinction and there is nothing more really to it. However, for example in some society’s woman are looked like less than equal and are given less food therefore by nature they won’t grow in the same manner as a male (Mikkola 3.2). This is stating that it’s not entirely biology, but the way in which the opportunities that have been given. Next, there is a perception about certain sex that they fit a certain box and shouldn’t go outside of that. Now, that creates a greater divide on the two general sexes that would possibly not exist if there wasn’t a predetermined perception and expectations. One of the final statements is that sex should be looked more transparently rather than looking at the features of a male or female. 2. Gender- According to Nancy Chodorow gender is more of a learned behavior than automatically born with (Mikkola 1.1). Additionally, they develop early in someone’s life with the influence of parental guidance. The roles of gender are heavily discussed throughout the article as well as needing adaptation in parenting roles to have more of an equaled role. In this part of the article, I found very interesting “ childhood socialization further builds on and reinforces these unconsciously developed ego boundaries” (Mikkola 2.2). Therefore, this quote really focuses on the mental makeup of gender which I find intriguing. I also, agree with the notion that parenting needs to continue to evolve for more of an equality experience growing up in a household. My biggest takeaway from the gender discussion is that it is ever-evolving and many different aspects especially focusing on the social aspect. 3. The perception of what a person’s sex and gender are had a major effect on the roles in which you had during this time period. More importantly, if you were considered different and didn’t fit the mold of the community than you would become an outcast which is demonstrated throughout this article. Next, Hall is primarily in court because of the unknown of what the person on a sexuality level which causes concern on a physiological level for the people in the community. The larger discussion is on the colonists stating that they have two possible determinants for sex (Norton 38). The two are both physical and the other being genitalia(Norton 38). Lastly, this comes back to the appearance and perception of the colonists that led to the verdict on Hall’s case and leads to further isolation for Hall. 4. Courtney Significance of Sex/Gender in US Today- Each person on their appearance should not be initially judged and should be learned to understand them further. Next, the sexual reproductive system and mental makeup are discussed throughout the video to understand a person. Also, I think most importantly there are many different topics and terms to really understand what that person truly is. A term that I didn’t know was intersex which is defined as someone’s “sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit a traditional definition of male and female” (Act 1). This shows that in the US gender and sex are evolving daily and are becoming the norm. 5. Turban’s opinion on Sex/Gender- First off, I believe it tells you that there is still a great debate on what gender is how it should exactly be defined. Also, the statement by

Trump’s administration saying “grounded by science” is contradictory by Turban saying it is not scientific reality (Turban 1). Also, according to this article many people who have “disorders to sexual development” wouldn’t fall into this determination on gender. Furthermore, this article shows that there are growth and understanding of gender and sex within the US today, but there are many more obstacles from people and the government to still fully understand the topic. 6. Sex/Gender similar/different today- I believe that sex and gender are very similar in the sense that there heavily debated and discussed. Furthermore, they both are similar in biology being dismissed more and more on the conversation and trying to understand both sex and gender greater without using biology. Next, I think gender is way more understanding in today’s society than the person’s sex which has less clarity. Also, gender roles have changed very much in the US today, but still, the sex aspect for the US still is lingering behind in that category. Both are on the way up of fitting into the US culture of today but have some hurdles to still overcome. Citations Act, C. (2017, November 08). Gender 101 With Courtney Act.
