wicked problems and leadership solutions tame problem

clear problem definition single organization regular leadership: implement existing solution

• • •

crisis problem

• • •

clear and finite problem definition, but urgent need for solution need for new solutions, more permission for action and innovation directive leadership: demand for action and for someone taking control

wicked problem

• • •

unclear problem definition, not finite requires innovation and learning, as well as multiple agencies adaptive leadership: to create multi-stakeholders environments and experiment

Global poverty as an example of a wicked problem: Two ways to think about poverty Absolute Poverty

Relative Poverty

Absolute poverty refers to a set standard which is consistent over time and between countries.

Relative poverty views poverty as socially defined and dependent on social context, hence relative poverty is a measure of income inequality. Usually, relative poverty is measured as the percentage of population with income less than some fixed proportion of median income.

A person who lacks food, water, shelter, access to basic medical facilities, and clothing is poor.

THE POVERTY TRAP

1. Hunger, disease and lack of education lead to fewer job opportunities

Hunger 4. Fewer educated people means fewer people able to build an efficient infrastructure

5. Those who lack education, suffer ill health, go to bed hungry and live in poor housing also find it difficult to make demands heard by governments

Can’t Work Lack of education

Disease Poverty

3. People with no education are less likely to know the causes of disease

Fewer job opportunities

2. No income, no food

6. In addition to being poor, they are powerless, and this makes it even more difficult to escape the poverty trap

Divergent vs. convergent thinking

Divergent problems are those where answers appear to contradict each other. A different approach involving empathy and emotional intelligence is required.

Convergent problems are those for which attempted solutions gradually converge on one solution or answer

Wicked problems require divergent and then convergent thinking. It also requires innovation and experimentation of untested ideas and solutions. INNOVATIVE | RESPONSIBLE | ENGAGED
