Laxative, Bulk-Forming Agents CATEGORY CLASS ______________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action It increases the bulk in your stool, an effect that helps to cause movement of the intestines. It also works by increasing the amount of water in the stool, making the stool softer and easier to pass. Psyllium, one type of bulk-forming laxative, has also been used along with a proper diet to treat high cholesterol.

Therapeutic Use Manage SIMPLE or CHRONIC CONSTIPATION; particularly if associated w/ a LOW-FIBER DIET. - Useful in situation in w/c STRAINING should be AVOIDED( after MI. rectal surgery, prolonged bed rest) - Used in management of CHRONIC WATERY DIARRHEA.

Complications Resp: BRONCHOSPASM GI: CRAMPS, INTESTINAL or ESOPHAGEAL OBSTRUCTION, NAUSEA, VOMITING.

Medication Administration Adult: 30g/day in divided doses. Children: 15g/day in divided doses. Children dosage: >6yr.: 1 tsp/packet/wafer (1.5-3 g pysillium) in or with 4-8oz of glass of liquid 2-3x/day

Contraindications/Precautions May LOWER absorbption of WARFARIN, SALICYLATES, or DIGOXIN CONTRAINDICATED IN: Hypersensitive, Abdominal Pain, Nausea or Vomiting. (Especially when associated with fever); Serious Adhesions; Dysphagia. -USE CAUTIOUSLY IN: Some Dosage forms contain SUGAR, ASPARTAME, OR EXCESSIVE SODIUM and should be avoided in patients on RESTRICTED DIETS. OB/LACTATION: has beed used safely.

Interactions Psyllium has no known severe, serious, or moderate interactions with other drugs.Mild interactions of psyllium include: sodium picosulfate

Nursing Interventions - Packets are NOT STANDARDIZED for volume, but each contain 3-3.5g of psyllium. - Adminisiter with a FULL GLASS of WATER of JUICE. Followed by an additional glass if liquid. -Sol'n should be taken IMMEDIATELY after mixing; it will CONGEAL; -DO NOT administer w/o sufficient fluid and DO NOT CHEW GRANULES.

Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Treat / manage simple or chronic constipation (low fiber diet)

-ENCOURAGE patient to use other forms of bowel reuglations. (increase bulk in the diet, fluid intake and mobility). -Normal bowel habits are individualize and may vary to 3X/DAY to 3X/WEEK. - May be used for LONG-TERM management of CHRONIC CONSTIPATION.
