Isolation: The United-States declines to give aid to Hungarian patriots in 1849

One example of Isolation, which is the policy in which the United States refrains from the involvement in global affairs, would be when the US declined to give aid to Hungarian patriots in 1849. The United States did not want to get involved in any European crisis and wanted to focus on expanding their territory. The United States did not want to get involved with global affairs and wanted to focus on the nation’s sphere of influence.

The United States wanted to focus on expanding the nation through the influence of the Manifest Dynasty and move westward into the country. The US was facing issues of their own, like having a small number of resources and a small army, the nation was also, still recovering from the Civil War. However, the United States helped free Hungarian leaders but did not consider Hungry as an independent country.

Intervention: The United States attempts to mediate in the Venezuela-Great Britain dispute in 1895

Intervention is the involvement by a foreign power in the affairs of another nation which is typically used to achieve the stronger power’s aims. An example of this would be when the United States attempted to mediate in the Venezuela-Great Britain dispute in 1895. What happened was that there was an argument as to who had ownership of the gold mine that was found on the border between Venezuela and Great Britain.

James Monroe issued the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 which stated that the Western Hemisphere was off-limits from any European nations, giving Venezuela the gold. The United States issued this document to not cause any issues for any neighboring countries and to end this little feud.

Imperialism: The United States annexes Hawaii in 1900

Imperialism is the policy of creating colonies in weaker nations in order to generate materials and have access to raw markets. It was common in Europe, however, in 1900 the United States annexed Hawaii which is an example of imperialism. With Hawaii having the raw material of sugar, the United States wanted that raw material and colonized within the nation that would later become a state.

Congress passed the McKinley Tariff revoking Hawaii’s privileges causing a great depression within the nation. To survive the tariff, with the help of Samuel Dole, President Benjamin Harrison, and US President William McKinley Hawaii was able to dethrone the queen and get annexed, which allowed Hawaii to become a US state in 1959....
