Description

03.07 Surprise!

Which story did you read?

The Sniper by Liam O'Flaherty.

Describe the physical setting of the story. Which words or descriptions contribute to the emotional setting or mood? What is the mood that results from the author’s use of description?

The story takes place in Dublin during the Irish Civil War. The atmosphere is heavy with gunfire, which makes the story more frightening.

What is the theme? How do the final lines of the story influence the meaning or theme of the story?

The theme is tragedy and violence. And then the sniper went over the body and looked at his brother's face. Show that everyone in a war has a relative or family and that violence is not the answer. The sniper is facing something he never thought he would do, killing his own brother.

What techniques does the author use to create a surprise ending?

The author sets up suspense at the beginning. The author makes you think about the whole story.

Were you surprised by the twist? If so, why? If not, what should the author have done to make the ending more surprising and effective?

I was surprised that the Sniper killed his brother. I didn’t know that it was going to be his brother or any relative or anyone he knew personally outside of the war. So that was a real shock and heartbreaker right there.

What was your experience in reading this story? Did it evoke fear or physically influence you? Why or why not?

This story creates a memorable suspense to the readers. When my teacher introduced us to this story, I was interested in it. Somehow the author’s figurative language caught my attention. People in my class was not very talkative anymore, it was silence. That’s how good the story was. The story invoked fear because I felt like I was in the war watching it go down. The tragic loss of killing his brother due to war is something he can’t take back.

Create a surprise ending to an original story. You don't need to write a whole story—just the twist ending. Begin with a short summary of the setting, characters, plot, and conflicts in your story. Then, write an ending to your story with an unexpected twist using the techniques learned in this lesson. You should only need two or three fully developed paragraphs. Be sure to label at least three of the techniques used to demonstrate what you've learned.

The entire army is as one. Everybody has the same mindset and the same goal in mind: crush the enemy and enjoy it while it lasts. The ground trembles as an army of 190,000 strides onwards. Thousands of feet, all moving as individuals, only a fool might mistake the march of this army for a small earthquake. Bullets of sadness whipped through my soul as I continued to stand there, rewinding the scenario in my head. Was it really my brother?

The soldiers remained talking, talking as if my shocked face wasn’t there. Virtually all soldiers are talking to each other despite the noise around them. It seems most of them are eager to fight the battle they're marching towards. I had one more bullet in the rifle, one more bullet. After the war, both my brother and I were supposed to head home with greetings and celebrations. Knowing that I killed the son who made father proud every day, the son who had a passion for joining the army, the son who never backed down towards anything that involved fear, I knew I was going to be hated for what I did. I

knew I had to decide. I went by my brother’s body, and told him that I will be joining him, joining him today....
