Description

9/15/16 Notes Signs of Homogenization in previous films/readings? - America taking after Japan with the sushi - McDonald’s; going all over the world and selling fast food Would Bestor (author of sushi article) agree? - Even though we eat sushi now, we still think of Japan when we eat it - Ex: california rolls; our own invention, not real Japanese sushi; heterogenization - Global flows don’t just go from US out, they also flow INTO the US (from “falling apart” readings) Author’s motivation to write article? - Accumulation of technology over time is great - Bombardment of advertising of new technology (ex iphone 7 l o l) - Consumerism; as soon as something new comes out we don’t care about our “old” technology - Structured obsolescence (planned); the idea that people design products with the knowledge that something newer and better will come out within years - Materials of technology are toxic af Manufactured Landscape (screening) Is there something made visible in the film that you normally don’t see? Why? Which dimensions of globalization are featured? What motivations do the photographer, filmmakers, and Parks share? What does the film share with Junkyard Wars? - You can’t see the end of the factory in the shot they have of it because it’s so big - People literally asleep at their work stations in the factory - People digging through ginormous piles of trash, picking out scraps of ?? metal - Dimensions; ideological, ecological (cultural) - Trash compressed like in wall-e, but this movie came out way before that one did - A lot of our waste is going to china; they heat up the boards and pull off metals with pliers; burning the boards is incredibly toxic to the people who are doing it, but it’s their job so they do - Old lady sitting on her porch who’s been through everything, and now she’s sitting on her porch next to a pile of e-waste - Piles of foam, kids are playing in it, getting pictures in it - Guy literally hammering metal bits off of computer parts by hand - Water has to be shipped in because it’s too contaminated from all of the waste - Toy story toys laying in landscapes - Raise awareness of how OUR waste affects people around the world; no objection of making it look bad or look good, they just want people to see it...
