Malley 1 Erin Malley OL-211: 1-3 Journal Southern New Hampshire University 06 May 2021 Strategies that Helped a Hotel HR Executive During the Pandemic An article called, “4 Strategies that helped a Marriot HR exec weather ‘the most challenging year’”, was written by Emilie Shumway and explains how Jessica Lee, Marriott’s vice president of performance and brand talent advisory, got through the pandemic with her sanity still intact and keeping the organization successful. This was an informative article, as it explains the trials and tribulations that Marriott International went through during the COVID-19 pandemic. Employees were laid-off and Marriott faced major financial losses, as well as a personal loss of losing the company’s president and CEO, Arne Sorensen. Lee spoke at a virtual HR technology conference and stated four ways that she was able to keep her team strong during the pandemic. Lee stated to “be clear when you know what’s happening – and when you don’t”. It is important to admit when you are not sure of something, as well as when you are. This ensures a trusting relationship between team members. She also stated to “create frictionless tools that ‘treat people with grace’”, meaning that it is important to sympathize with people and to show compassion for the situation. Lee said to “stay close to the action”, meaning to stay in-the-know about what is going on around us – including what is going on with employees. “Focus on what you can control”, meaning to take things one at a time and being content with only controlling what you can in that present moment. Lee even allowed a member of the team to come forth and verbalize her own experiences with the pandemic, during a webchat with a large audience.
