Module 5 Short Responses – Question 1 In the space below, specify which historical lens you'd like to use for this exercise.

For this exercise, I would like to use the social lens.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 2 Next, formulate a research question about the civil rights movement (historical time from 1954 – 1968), using the lens you've chosen.

What were the long-term effects that the laws of the south placed on the education system for African Americans?

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 3 First, go back and review the research question you developed in Step 1. For Step 2, first name two different primary sources that you might use to answer that question. Be as specific as you can. Your primary sources should be found using the Shapiro Library.

1st Browne-Marshall, Gloria J. "Busing Ended 20 Years Ago. Today Our Schools Are Segregated Once Again." Time.Com, Sept. 2019, p. N.PAG. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=bsu&AN=138572674&site=edslive&scope=site. This source is a Time Magazine article that contained a photograph of children being bussed into white schools being escorted by police officers. 2nd "Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas." Brown et Al. v. Board of Education of Topeka et Al, Aug. 2017, p. 1. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspxdirect=true&db=khh&AN=21212236&site=edslive&scope=site. This is the court documents from the Supreme Court Ruling in Brown V. Board of Education.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 4 Next, name two different secondary sources you could use to answer your research question. Again, be as specific as you can. Your secondary sources should be found using the Shapiro Library.

Browne-Marshall, Gloria J. "Busing Ended 20 Years Ago. Today Our Schools Are Segregated Once Again." Time.Com, Sept. 2019, p. N.PAG. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=bsu&AN=138572674&site=edslive&scope=site. I used an image from this source as a primary source since the image was directly from an event that took place in history. I would also use the contents of the article as a secondary source. Mahnken, Kevin. "How America's Schools Have (and Haven't) Changed Since the Brown v. Board Verdict." Education Digest, vol. 84, no. 3, Nov. 2018, p. 14. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx? direct=true&db=f5h&AN=132333831&site=edslive&scope=site. This is a periodical talking about the things that have changed as well as the things that have not changed in the school systems in the last 65 years.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 5 Construct a thesis statement that provides an answer to the research question you posed in Step 1. Base your response on the historical evidence that's been presented in this course so far, as well as any research you may have done on your own.

There have been many changes in the education system since the Supreme Court ruled on Brown v. Board of Education. Although there have been many positive changes, the lasting effects of the Jim Crow era still play a major roll in the education of African Americans today.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 6 Name three specific historical events that can be considered contributory causes of the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Briefly explain why you believe each of these events contributed to the passage of the Act.

Bloody Sunday involved nonviolent protestors were killed, this caused outrage around the African American community. I think this even played the role of the Voting Rights Act. Martin Luther King's helped gain more support for the civil rights movement based on the type of leadership and character Martin Luther King Jr. was. The assassination of John F. Kennedy played a role as well. People knew the type of man he was and how he supported the African American community potentially played a major role in being contributory to the Voting Rights Act.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 7 Based on what you read about the passage of the Voting Rights Act on Page 1 of this learning block, name one event that was part of the course of this bill's passage by Congress.

I believe Brown vs. Board of Education 1954 was part of the course of this bills passage by Congress.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 8 Name three specific consequences caused by the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

The representation of African Americans increased in Congress, local offices as well as state governments. White southerners shifted towards the Republican party after voting. Then Civil Rights acts were passed by congress which heavily represented by Democrats. Voting registration surged to record numbers after passing this act. Module 5 Short Responses – Question 9 One of these scholars relied heavily on evidence about the substance of today's political debate. Which scholar was that? What sort of evidence did he use?

The scholar who relied heavily on evidence about the substance of today's political debate is Kennedy. Kennedy used the evidence of modern political debate topics/issues like gay marriage as well as abortion rights to get his point across.

Yes, I felt that I understood the author's topic within the first couple of sentences. 2. The author's thesis is: By doing an extremely close look on the desegregation of public facilities based on the first sit-in in Charleston, the focus of the article is to demonstrate how a miniature, devoted group of high school students as well as teachers operated an integral role in the civil rights movement. 3.
