Hints, Tips and Troubleshooting ! Ode To Joy: This is the easiest piece in this book, hence why it is first in the book! Apart from knowing that your 2nd fingers on the G string are close to the 3rd finger, and your 2nd fingers on the D string are close to the 1st finger, there isn’t anything else troublesome in this piece to worry about. Country Gardens: In this piece, remember that your fingers are all going to be close to the 3rd finger and where it tells you to do a 4th finger, you must do a 4th finger. This is to avoid open strings and awkward crossings resulting in a tone that is not great, and with scratches and screeches. March: The bars/measures to watch out for are 6, 10,11,12, 13 and 14. In the video lesson, I explain where your fingers need to be for these passages. Other than that, I don’t see anything else tricky here.

Blue Danube This has a lot of string jumping here, but all you need to do, is very briefly stop the bow, move it to the new string, then carry on. Try not to make a big deal out of doing this, as it should sound like the bow has been purposely stopped. It all needs to be done in a split second. You will get faster and better at this as time goes on, but it is a very tricky manoeuvre to do, I wont lie! Leaving For The Last Time: My favourite piece in the book - not just because I wrote it, but because of the melody - it reminds me of a show tune… So this is the first piece in the book that uses ‘flat’ notes - namely Bb and Eb. Pieces with flats in them always mean that the fingers are going to be back, and usually towards the ‘nut’ of the violin, or basically as far back as the finger will physically go on the fingerboard. Just remember NO OPEN E strings in the piece please, as you need to use the 4th finger crammed in next to the 3rd finger to create an Eb on the D string. Page 1  4

! Minuet in G: Aside from the C#’s in the latter half of this piece, I don’t see anything that will instantly trouble you. There are some string crossings, but as I said in the Blue Danube, you need to briefly stop the bow, reposition it, then carry on. Air from Water Music Suite: There are some dotted rhythms in this piece, so this means that you will want to try and stop the bow a little, as this will keep the piece dotted and ‘choppy’ sounding - which is what we want. Don’t lift the bow off the string however. I have put in a ‘down bow’ and ‘up bow’ symbol here and there. This is just so that you can keep the flow of the piece, as it can be awkward if certain passages or combination of notes and rhythms are played with opposite bows. They will feel wrong.

All Hornpipe from Water Music Suite: Don’t be put off with the 3/2 time signature here. It just means there are 3 half notes in a measure or for UK, 3 minims in a bar. Each note is still to be played exactly as it would with a more familiar 4/4 time signature. Other than that, this is relatively straight forward to play.

Fröhlicher Landmann: This was originally written for the piano, but it has such a lovely medley that translates nicely onto the violin, I wanted to include it. Again, a little jumpy in terms of strings, but nothing we have not covered previo...
