Description

In Chapter 8, “You can't go this way” of 102  Minutes by Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn, the ethos voice was shown through the creation of the new building code. Port Authority did not want to follow the laws of the present building code, so they created a new one that did not put their renter’s safety as top priority. “The reason the Port Authority turned to the new code for its big project was simple: it would make the trade center much cheaper to build” (Dwyer and Flynn, 105). The city made the new code for Port Authority so they could not get in trouble for breaking the law. Port Authority only wanted to build newer, higher, and cheaper skyscrapers instead of wanting to protect their renters. The new code allowed the World Trade Centers to be built with fewer safety precautions than the previous code required. Old ways of building were thrown to the side to make room for new and modern ways. “Chief Dunn and Chief O’Hagan noted that New York City abandoned the heavy, dense masonry that had defined the interiors of the old-style skyscrapers, epitomized by the Empire State Building, and had provided protection in fire” (Dwyer and Flynn, 107). Forgetting the previous era of skyscrapers, the twin towers were created to increase the profit of rentable space within the buildings by cutting the amount of fireproofing on the walls and steel structure. 102  Minutes brought light to the unknown events that led up to the towers collapse on 9/11 (Dwyer and Flynn, 117)....
