FEMALE ENDURANCE AGAINST SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Abstract This paper examines the comparisons of gender identity and sexuality when someone identifies as a female in the workforce. Samantha Schreuder went viral in 2021 for speaking out against the sexual harassment females endure while working in the hospitality industry. In 2016, the Australian Bureau of Statistics submitted a survey to assess the data observed and found that fifty-three percent of women have experienced sexual harassment within their lifetime. To bring awareness to this progressing issue, this article will concentrate on the social injustice encountered by those five million females. One main influence of this statistic is the abuse of power those in authoritative positions hold over those working under them. Samantha began working at the age of fourteen, her story follows the manipulation she received throughout this time as her colleagues and bosses made advances on her naivety. To battle these figures, Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins has been combating against the government with the use of her ‘Respect at Work’ reports to employ new legislations and amendments against sexual harassment within the workforce. This has proven to be effective as recently the Prime Minister has admitted recognition of this issue and began implementing Kate’s ‘Respect at Work’ Amendment Bill 2021 concepts. As an emerging human service professional, I hope to see this issue addressed with decreasing percentages of women affected by sexual harassment. I will contribute to this idea by sharing information, reporting statistics, and engaging in debates around this topic to ensure correct data and research is utilized. Whilst the Fair Work Rights Department is making changes towards a safer environment for women, this opportunity of acknowledgement could be used to further introduce socially just and culturally safe organisations, which are instrumental in creating an atmosphere where females feel secure and unafraid of their workplace.
