Description

Book Presentation Assignment: Choose a book to read independently. Show your book to me for approval before you start reading. Once you’ve read your book, prepare a 4-7 minute talk in which you preview the book for your classmates. Submit an outline of your talk in advance. Show me the book you intend to read. (20) Submit a typed outline of your talk in advance. Follow the model. (20) Give an awesome presentation. (40)

Format Introduction Start with a hook to grab your audience’s attention. This might consist of a rhetorical question, an anecdote, or an amusing observation. Include the title and author Provide some information about the author (background, education, other books published, awards, etc.) Your reason for choosing this book

Summary Fiction: The challenge here is to give your audience a clear sense of what the book is like without spoiling any surprises or suspense for those who might want to read it. Be sure to mention the setting, describe each of the characters, and identify the important conflicts (problems) faced by the main characters. Nonfiction: Provide an overview of your book including an explanation of how the book is organized. (The table of contents can help you figure this out.) Then choose three or four sections or chapters that impressed you and talk about each of these in some detail. Opinion Explain what you perceive to be the strengths and weaknesses of the book Would you recommend this book to others? Why or why not? Are there certain types of readers who would be more likely to enjoy this story? Closing Finish strong! Plan a definite closing statement and memorize it. It should be clear to the audience that you are finishing your talk. No presentation should end with an awkward silence after which you shrug at your audience out of embarrassment and slink back to your seat.

How to Prepare

Give yourself enough time to read the book at a leisurely pace. Do some research to gather information on your author. Prepare notes on the details you want to include in each section of your talk. Type your outline using the model provided and submit it in advance. Decide what type of notes you will have in your hands when you give your presentation and create them. Some students use their outline. Others prefer to speak from a set of notecards. Still others use no notes. It’s your choice! Practice! Practice! Practice! Literally give your talk aloud either to an imaginary audience or to volunteers (Your siblings, parents, friends, pets, etc.). The more you practice, the more confident you will feel. When you practice your talk, time yourself. This is really the only way to know how long your presentation will be. Your talk must be between four and seven minutes long or you will be penalized.

I. Introduction A. Hook: How far would you go to help a friend in trouble? B. Title & Author: Of Mice and Men, a novel by John Steinbeck C. Author Info 1. John Steinbeck (1902-1968) 2. Born Salinas Valley, CA, the setting of many of his stories 3. Stanford University, never graduated 4. Concern for poor reflected in many of his stories, including In Dubious Battle, The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men 5. Nobel Prize for Literature 1962 D. Reason for Choosing this Book: Recommended by friend II. Summary A. Setting: Salinas Valley, CA – 1930’s – Depression B. Main Characters: George & Lennie, their friendship C. The dream D. Their concern for each other set them apart from the other people on the ranch: Curley, Curley’s wife, Crooks, Slim – each lonely in own way E. Lennie’s tremendous physical strength and childlike simplicity are a dangerous combination. He gets himself into serious trouble despite George’s efforts to protect him.

III. Opinion A. Strengths 1. Poetic language 2. Tightly structured – no wasted words – rich novel in 100 pages 3. Characterization: Steinbeck’s characters are vibrant and memorable 4. Strong sense of place – the author’s use of descriptive detail transports the reader to this time and place B. Weaknesses 1. I thought the scenes that take place in Lennie’s imagination were confusing. 2. This novel is very short; I found myself wanting to spend more time with George & Lennie C. Recommendation 1. I recommend this book to all readers. 2. It’s an easy way to try John Steinbeck; most of his books are much longer. 3. This book is a classic and has become a part of American pop culture. The Simpsons, South Park, and Bugs Bunny have all done tributes. Writers, artists, and cartoonists often make allusions to this story.

IV. Closing: In my opinion, this is one of those books that everyone should read. Not only will it help you to understand the plight of itinerant workers during the Depression, but it will challenge you to examine your own ideas about what it means to be a faithful friend....
