Apple and Foxconn The level of competition within the technology factor is high with Apple’s direct competitors being Samsung, Google and Amazon all holding significant capital on research and development and marketing industries. Apple has managed this highly competitive market through innovation of unique products to increase and strengthen their market share becoming the first US company to attain over $1 trillion of market capitalization and establish strong brand loyalty and superior market position. Apple’s reliance on Foxconn has come into question with the US and China trade war, Apple’s strategy to diversify suppliers will allow less dependence on Foxconn. In the 90’s and early 2000’s Apple’s supplier relationship with Foxconn thrived as China offered a large, flexible a cheap labour force for manufacturing. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple established the relationship when he met with Foxconn founder Terry Gou in the early 2000’s to be one of the few manufacturers of iPods and the iPhone. This relationship developed and enabled a cycle of interdependency with Apple’s reliance on Foxconn’s production and Chinese market share to purchase their products and China’s reliance on Foxconn being their largest private sector employer. Apple’s heavily dependent relationship with Foxconn has raised concerns in the past with operations executives highlighting it as a potential high risk. Apple attempted to move some production outside of China and Foxconn and expand into India or Vietnam however they did not achieve the same level of efficiency as Foxconn’s hundreds of thousands of skilled and trained employees and engineers for decades. The level of skilled and unskilled labour workers available in China is incomparable, Apple also fears losing their connection to the Chinese market through Foxconn being the second largest economy and a massive population of consumers....
