The documentary The Lost Children of Rockdale County is about an outbreak of syphilis in 1996. The unusual thing about the outbreak, in the opinion of the professionals, was that it happened in a suburban area with mostly white teenagers from well-off families. I do think parents should be legally responsible for the actions of minor children, to some extent. For example, in the case of school shootings, several are committed by minor children who had easy access to their parents’ guns. In addition to the child being responsible, the parents are equally at fault for not securing their weapons. I think the teenagers could have improved their relationships with their parents if they had open communication, but if parents do not make open communication an option that children know is available to them, it opens the door for many problems, even as extreme as what was presented in the documentary. I think the girls were willing to have sex with the boys even though they admitted that they don’t enjoy it because they believed that sex was something they should be doing because of peer pressure, and perhaps they also believed that it would make them feel better about other things. In Chapter 9, we learned about how common unsafe sex is, especially for younger people, and this documentary illustrated that perfectly because the lack of protection during sexual activities is what caused the syphilis outbreak....
