Free Reading: Thirteen Reasons Why

The theme of Thirteen Reasons Why i s betrayal. All of the 13 reasons why Hannah committed suicide explain how her supposed “friends” betrayed her. For example, Ryan publishes her personal poem in the school’s magazine, Justin took inappropriate pictures of Hannah on the slide and let Bryce spread them, and Courtney being afraid to come out as lesbian, tells people that Hannah was making out with another girl and asked for a threeway with her after the pictures of them kissing leaks. Unfortunately, the biggest of them all was self betrayal. Hannah betrayed herself when she decided to commit suicide. I really enjoyed how unique the style of this book is. I have never read anything close to Thirteen Reasons Why. I feel that the text represents depression well. Many characters in the book, and even some of the readers find that Hannah Baker is overreacting, but I believe that when you are depressed, everything builds up and even the smallest things can tip you over, just like that happened to Hannah Baker. Many lessons can be learned in Thirteen Reasons Why . We always have to be careful about the words we use, and the actions we take, because they can have a lasting impact on others. Everyone in the book used hateful words against each other and this could have been one of the causes that Hannah committed suicide. Another lesson that we can learn from the book is that suicide is never the answer because it will not fix anything and it will not end everything. It may end the pain for you, but it will harm others that love you....
