CHAPTER1 Numerology–TheScienceofSelf-Discovery

yliferadicallychangedwhenImetHettieTempletonin1954.Notquitesureofmycareer choicetobeanelectricalengineer,myfriendBillChristophersuggestedIseeMrsT.and “haveyournumbersread.” Thoughmystudentdaysweredevotedtotheuseofnumbers,tocomparingquantitiesand solvingequations,Iwasyettobeconvincedthatnumberscouldbeusedtounravellife’s problems.YetwithinfiveminutesofmeetingMrsT.,mydoubtdissolved. Equippedwithonlymybirthdateandmyname,MrsT.toldmethingsaboutmyselfthatI thoughtonlyIknew.Thathourwithherchangedmylife’sdirection.ItgavemeaconfidenceI hadnotpreviouslyknownandexplainedmany“mysterious”pastevents.Iwasfascinated.So thefollowingyear,coincidingwithmypostgraduateresearchintomedicalelectronics,I commencedstudyinnumerology,theScienceofNumbers. OverthemanylongyearsthatIhavestudiednumerology,I’velearnedthatthereisno betterwayforustounderstandourselves,orourpersonalconnectionswithothers. Somanypeoplespendsomuchoftheirtimezigzaggingthroughlife,bouncingfrom experiencetoexperienceasthoughcaughtinapinballmachine.Wesimplydonotknowour ownminds,northeappropriatepath(s)totake.Andthoughtherearecountlesscoursesand seminarsavailabletodaydevotedtopersonalgrowth,theinformationoverloadoftencreates psychologicalandintellectualindigestion–andawholenewexperienceofinnerconfusion. Numerology,ontheotherhand,providesdirectknowledgeoftheinnerself,andfromthis basisofself-understanding,weareabletodirectadeterminedcoursethroughlife. Numerologyrecognisesthatnumbersarevibrations,andeachvibrationisdifferentfromthe nextduetothenumberofcyclesitoscillatesatpersecond.Thevariationineachcaseisa number.Everysound,colour,fragranceandthoughtisavibration,andeachdancestothe tuneofitsinherentnumber,eachinitsdistinctwayconnectedtolife.Thus,itdoesn’ttaketoo muchimaginationtorealisethathumanlifehasanintimateconnectionwithnumbers,forthey aretheveryessenceoflife’sexpression. Assuch,understandingnumbersprovidesuswithasimpleandaccuratemeaningofourlife inthesamewayasaroadmaphelpsustonavigatearoutewehavenotpreviouslytravelled. Pythagorasrevealsthewonderofnumbers Bornin608B.C.,Pythagorassoughttofreethehumanmindfrompoliticalandreligious confinement.Pythagorasgatheredabouthimanever-increasingnumberofstudentskeento aspiretowardpersonalindependence,andtodiscoverthemeaningofloveandlife.The essenceofhisteachingswasenshrinedintheaxiom:“Knowthyself,thenthoushaltknowthe universeandGod.” PythagorasfoundedhisownuniversityatCrotona,aGreekcolonyinsouthernItaly,around 532B.C.Admissionwasopentoallwhosincerelysoughttolearn.Therewasnodistinction betweensex,race,colourorcreed.However,everypersonwhoenteredhadtomakea commitmenttointensestudy. Themajorcoursetaughtwasinself-development,andwasprovidedinathree-part curriculum.Theprimarycomponentwasknownas“Preparation.”Itconsistedofintensive traininginthe“tenmathematicaldisciplines,”designedtoprovidethestudentwith“empire overtheself.” Thesecondtrimesterwascalled“Purification.”Itsessencewastheunderstandingoflife,its purposeandhowtoworkinharmonywiththatpurpose,astaughtthroughthe“Scienceof Numbers,”morecommonlyknowntodayasnumerology. Inthefinaltrimester,studentsweretaughttheconceptof“Perfection.”Perfectionembraced theintegrationofthephysical,mentalandspiritualcomponentsofeachpersonandoflife. *Thisbookisofferedtothekeenstudentoflifewho,perhapsunconsciously,hasbeen searchingfor“Purification,”fortheanswerstolife’smanyunsolvedenigmas;itisacomplete courseinnumerologybasedontheoriginalPythagoreanteachings.Youwilldiscoverwhoyou reallyareandhowyoucanfurtherimproveandunderstandyourlife.Numerologycanalso helpyoutorelatebettertootherpeople,becomemoreemotionallyandfinanciallysecure,

CHAPTER2 TheInnerSelfRevealed

ithineachpersonisabeautifullightwaitingtoshineforth,amagnificentbeingachingfor expression.Thatistheinnerself,ourindividuality,ouressentialuniqueness.Butthisisnot whatwegenerallypresenttotheworld.Insteadwehaveproduceda“personality,”a compositeexpressionatthecruxofwhichisourindividuality(ourinnerself). Theaveragepersonisoftentwopeople.Thatwhichisfreelyexpressedisusuallytheimage, whiletherealperson,theuniqueindividualityofourinnerself,isalltoofrequently suppressed.Theimageissomethingofanemotionalghostwehavecultivatedtodefendour sensitivities.Butwesellourselvesfartooshort,forourimagecanneverholdtothebeauty andgrandeurofournaturalinnerself. Theacutesensitivityoftheinnerselfisoftenmistakenforvulnerability,andasa consequence,webuildupapsychologicalwall.Westifleit,refusingtogiveitair,exerciseand expression. Webegintounderstandtheinnerselfonlywhenwestarttounderstandwhoweare,where wehavecomefrom,ourpurposeinchoosingthislifeandhowtoachievethatpurpose. Invaryingways,weareallsearching,butgenerallythesearchisforsomethingexternal.We needtorealisethattheanswersliewithin,forasthinking,sensitivepeople,weneedmore answerstolifethanreligion,politicsorsciencehavesofardelivered.Weneedguidance,not promises;examples,nottheories.AndthisiswhatIhopetodeliverinthepagesthatfollow. CHAPTER3 AMetaphysicalUnderstandingofNumbers

othematerialscientist,numbersaremerelysymbolsofcomparativequantity.Tothe metaphysicalscientist,ornumerologist,numbersassumeamoreprofoundsignificance.They representaspectsofwhatitistobehuman.Innumerology,allnumbersdevelopfromandare connectedtotheabsolutenumber,1,forthisnumberrepresentstheexpressionoftheego, withoutwhichhumanlifeisexpressionlessandwouldceasetoexist. Totrulyunderstandnumerology,wemustfirstknowtheessentialmetaphysicalmeaningof thenumbersasbasedontheoriginalarcanemeaningstaught2,500yearsagobyPythagoras. ONEisthefirstphysicalnumber.Astheonlyabsolutenumber,itisthesymbolofdivine expression.Itisthekeytoverbalself-expressionandtheexpressionoftheegoasa microcosmofthedivine(themacrocosm).Itisthekeytoourcommunicationskills. TWOisthefirstspiritual(feeling)number.Itrepresentsthedualityofhumansand symbolisesthegatewaytooursensitivities,aswellasourneedtobepartofapair.Itis thenumberofintuition. THREEisthefirstmind(thinking)number.Followingtheprimaryverbal(1)andintuitive (2)expressionscomesthemental.Itisthegatewaytotheconsciousmindandtorational understanding,thefocusofleft-brainactivity,thekeytomemory.Thenumber3is symbolisedbythetriangle,representingtheconnectionofmind,soulandbody. FOURisthenumberatthecentreofthephysical(doing)plane,thekeytoorderliness, practicalityandorganising.Itissymbolisedbythesquare,thebasisofallpractical construction. FIVEisthecentreofthesoul(feeling)planeandtheverycentreofthetotalBirthChart. Itisthespiritualnumberrepresentingloveandfreedomofexpression. SIXisthecentreofthemind(thinking)plane,whereitrepresentscreativity,the integrationoftheleftandrightlobesofthebrain.Italsorepresentstheoppositeof creativity–destruction.Thisis“negative”creativityexpressedasworry,stress,anxiety anddepression. SEVENisthesymbolofthetemple,thehumanbodyanditssevenchakrasorpower centres.Itistheteachinglearningnumber,thenumberofpracticalphilosophical experience.Suchlearningisusuallyacquiredthroughsacrificeasthemeansofindelible instruction. EIGHTisthemostactivespiritualnumber,situatedattheactiveendofthesoulplane.It isthenumberofwisdomexpressedintuitivelythroughlovingaction.Itbrings independenceintofocus. NINEisthethree-foldnumberattheactionendofthemindplane.Asmindinaction,it representsambition(thephysicalaspect),responsibility(thethinkingaspect)andidealism (thespiritualaspect),andsocombinestheattributesofeachofthepreviousnumbers. ZEROisasymbolratherthananumber.The0ispresentinmanybirthdatesandhasan importantsymbolicsignificance.Philosophicallyandmathematically,itrepresentsnothing (asthenumerator)andeverything(asthedenominator),thetwoinfiniteendsofthefinite, neitherofwhichisphysicallyattainable.Thus,itisatotallymysticalsymbol,indicativeof thedegreeofspiritualmysticisminherent(butrarelydeveloped)intheindividual.Anyone whohasoneormorezerosintheirbirthdatehasaninherentspiritualitythattheyshould recognise,forithasthepotentialtoassisttheminunderstandingmanyofthedeeper aspectsoflife(suchaslife’spurpose,thepowerofthoughtandtheprocessof reincarnation).

CHAPTER4 TheThreeAspectsofSelf

Topenetratethedeeperlevelofhumanawareness(whichnumerologyallowsustodo),it’s importanttounderstandthethree-foldnatureofhumanbeing,andhowour“threeselves”are intimatelyconnected. Threetermsareusedtosuccinctlyandsimplydescribeourthreeselves:BasicSelf, ConsciousSelf,andHighSelf.Letmeexplaineachinturn. BasicSelf Theprimarylevelofhumanexpressionisthroughthebody.Theinitialcryofthenewborn baby,theadult’syellforhelp,thelastgaspingwordofthedying–theyallemanatefromand throughBasicSelf.Itisatthislevelthatthechildattainspracticalfamiliaritywithits environment.Expressionofthefivephysicalsenses(seeing,hearing,touching,tastingand smelling)constitutetheprimaryfunctionsofBasicSelf,togetherwithtalking,laughing,crying andallotherphysicalactivities. BasicSelfmotivationislargelyreactiveoncewehavegrownoldenoughtomasterthe physicalactivitiesinourenvironment.Itisthebodyinself-defence;itisinstinctivebehaviour (asdistinctfromtheintuitivebehaviourofHighSelf).Insecurity,sensationseeking,thedesire forcontrolofsituationsorofotherpeople,orjustblatantexhibitionismaretheexpressionsof BasicSelf.BasicSelfpeopleareego-motivated,andtheirwants(desiresordemands)often supersedetheirneeds(requirementsandpreferences).Theyarenoticeablyleft-brain motivated. Anunderstandingofnumerologywillbeofconsiderablehelptosuchpeople,whowilllearn tocontainBasicSelfsothatitistheslaveoftheego,notitsmaster,andsolife’slessonsare readilyrecognisedwithoutneedforharsherrepetitionandcompoundedsacrifice. LetusneverforgetthatBasicSelfisvitaltobalancedexpressionwhileinthephysicalbody. Infact,itisthebodyinactionwhentotalintegrationwiththeothertwo“Selves”ispresent. Otherwise,itisthebodyin“reaction.” AswelearntocontrolBasicSelf,itbecomesourfaithfulphysicalservant.Egoisthen motivatedbycompassionandwisdom,ourphysicallivesbecomeorganised,andwebecome morepatientwithourselvesandothers.Ourlivesbecomelesssacrificialaswebecomemore philosophic.Weevolvefromthevictimtothevictor. BasicSelfinitsfullnessisthepositiveconnectionofthethreenumbersofthePhysical Plane:1,4and7.(SeeChapters5and6.) ConsciousSelf ConsciousSelfisthehomeofourthoughtsandattitudes.Itcanalsobethehomeofourjoy andsadnessaswellasourabilitytochooseeitherjoyorsadness.Itisthedomainofmemory, creativityandidealism. ConsciousSelfisthebridgebetweenBasicSelfandHighSelf,integratingourreactiveand instinctiveaspectswithourspiritualvalues.Itistheconnectionbetweentheleftandright lobesofourbrain. Whenitchoosestobenegative,ConsciousSelfbecomes“unconsciousself.”Itbecomes deceitful,reactive,evasiveandstress-ridden,andadoptstheroleofthepoorly-done-byvictim. However,ifweallowittofulfilitsultimatepurpose,ConsciousSelfisthegreatappraiser.It translatesspiritualawarenessintophysicalconsciousness.ConsciousSelfhelpsusto interpretintuition,loveandwisdom.It’stheplacewhereknowledge,compassionandwisdom istranslatedintopositiveaction. ConsciousSelfisanchoredinthememory;itlinkspastknowledgewithpresentexperience tocreatearepositoryofpertinentinformation.Whenusedpositively,thisrepositorybecomes thebasisofourconfidenceandself-esteem,andexpandstoembraceenhancedcreativityand, evenfurther,intelligentidealism. ThethreenumbersoftheMindPlaneare3,6and9,andtheyunitetoempowerConscious Self. HighSelf

HighSelfincludesourmoralvirtues,philosophicalideasandspiritualvalues.Itistheessence ofsensitivityandfeeling,theaspectofourbeingthatrecognisesanddeterminesourneeds.It expressesitselfasintuition,loveandwisdom.Itisourhighestformofexpression,theGod within.ActionthroughHighSelfislargelyright-brained:creative,spiritualand compassionate. Manypeopleconfuselovewithemotions.TrueloveisafunctionofHighSelf.Physical attraction(BasicSelf)andmentalconditioning(ConsciousSelf)frequentlyaccompanylove, butnotnecessarily.Lovehasadepththatpermeateseveryfacetofpositivehumanexpression. Itenjoysexpressionthroughtheemotions,butitisnotgovernedbytheemotions. HighSelfisbestfacilitatedthroughthedevelopmentofourintuition,whichleadstoadepth ofpersonalfreedom.Attendanttosuchfreedomisanewfoundwealthandcompassion.It leadstoadepthofwisdomthatisalmostlegendaryinhumanexpression. Innumerology,HighSelfisrepresentedastheSoulorFeelingPlane,comprisingthe numbers2,5and8.Thenewmillennium(witheverybirthdateatleastincludingatwo)will seeamoregenuinespiritualitymanifestedinhumanaffairs.

henwewanttoopenalockeddoor,weneedthekey.Formostpeople,theinnerselfis behindalockeddoor,forrarelydotheydiscoverwhotheyreallyareordeveloptheirultimate potential. ThekeytodiscoveringtheinnerselfthroughnumerologyistheBirthChart.Theprimary purposeoftheBirthChartistorevealataglancetheoverallformulaorpatternofour strengthsandweaknesses.EachdifferentbirthdateresultsinadifferentBirthChart–there arealmostendlessvariations,buttheconstructionisalwaysthesame.
