I. Prohibition (“The Noble Experiment”) The ban of sell, manufacture and transport alcohol since alcohol cause social & family probs and ppl become aggressive after consuming it. a. Support for prohibition WCTU - Woman Christian Temperance Union i. Temperance groups 1. WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Union) 2. ASL (Anti-Saloon League) ii. 100% Americanism b. The 18th amendment (1919) (The Volstead Act) c. Enforcement i. Urban vs Rural Urban - didn’t enforce this law very much since they love alcohol. (North) Rural ii. “Bootlegging” and “speakeasies” Bootlegging - smuggled alcohol illegally. Speakeasies - Secret night club, private parties v alcohol. iii.Pharmacies and churches Great front for bootlegging business since alcohol in pharmacy is legal. iv. “bathtub gin” Manufacture alcohol (gin) in bathtub. d. Consequences i. Economics There’s a decline in amusement, ppl go out less. Workers no place to release stress and they don’t feel like working anymore and unemployment increased. All type of industries closed down, lost in tax revenue, economy drop. ii. “Bootlegging” and crime Bootlegging made a lot money, a lot of ppl join bootlegging gangs, police officer bribed by bootleggers. iii.Alcoholism Increased, they produce alcohol by themselves, which has higher alcohol percentage. e. End of prohibition TOTAL FAIL !

II. Christian fundamentalism Put too much effort on physical instead of spiritual, they think the modern Jazz & Art is the wrong way for American. They’re against Darwin’s theory. a. Tennessee and Anti-Evolution Laws i. William Jennings Bryan (Politician) Banned the teaching of evolutions. ii. Scopes "monkey" trial 1. John Scopes (against William jennings bryan) 2. Clarence Darrow (lawyer) (help John to defend) (debate science vs religion v william) (surrender in order to bring the case up to US supreme court) (scopes FREE)...
