Part One: What is Theater In short terms: Theater is both a form of Art and Entertainment Types of Theater: ● Educational Theater ○ Theater found in schools, mainly in high school or colleges. ○ Purpose: to train young performers and designers ( also helps entertain the masses but this is not the main motive) ● Community Theater ○ Non-professional theater, often put on by groups or guilds ○ Don't make a profit, may charge admission solely to keep the theater afloat ○ Usually consists of untrained actors who don’t have much time to devote to practice ○ Purpose: Fun ● Semi-Professional Theater ○ Theater company that will give performers and sta a small pay, not even comparable to a paycheck or minimum wage. ○ Uses trained performers who can’t get a job in professional theater for whatever reason. ● Professional Not-For-Profit ○ Fully professional theater company with sponsors. ○ Sponsors do not get paid but the theater company will advertise them ( paid in advertisements) ○ Everyone gets paid a fair amount, but the company itself does not make any profit, only takes the money it needs to stay afloat. ● Professional For Profit ○ Fully Paid company with investors ○ Investors invest so they can make profit, this mainly comes from ticket sales and merchandise. ○ Risky to invest, most broadway shows done make profit ■ Professional Company Breakdown ● Local ( non-union) ● Regional (union) ● Non-Producing Houses (bring in touring companies) ● O-Broadway (NYC not in the Broadway area,...
