Description

ECON1101 Assignment & Presentation Weight: 20% [15% for written submission; 5% for workshop discussion] Due date: Wednesday 5th May 4pm via Turnitin Word Limit: 600 words (excluding tables, graphs and reference list)

Details about the Assessment • • •

A grading matrix will be available on wattle (in the Assignment Block). APA is the preferred referencing style When uploading your assignment: - use only .pdf or .doc or .docx files. - upload with file name: "question number_uni ID" - upload to the appropriate Turnitin submission link for the question you have answered (more details will be provided closer to the time of submission). In week 11 and 12 you will be asked to discuss the findings of your report in your workshop. - The tutors will contact students in their workshop who have done each question and put you in contact with each other  For example, everyone in the Monday 9am tutorial and who did Q1 will be emailed and notified that they (and the others in the email did Q1); those who did Q2 will be contacted etc. This will be done for each Workshop. - As a group you will be asked to lead the discussion on the workshop that covers your assignment. The discussion will go for approximately 10-15minutes.  This may entail asking the other students in the class what they think the answer/solution is and why; and then either agreeing and providing more detail or (politely) steering them in the right direction.  While not technically a ‘group’ assignment, you may wish to talk to each other prior to your workshop to go over some key aspects or findings. This, however is not necessary.  You do not have to produce a slide slow or formal presentation (unless you want to – and in this case will need to leave time for questions from the class). - Your mark for this part of the assessment will be about your engagement with the class – thus asking/answering/responding

with information is important – if you do not engage with the class, you will receive 0. In week 9 your tutor will let you know if your group is presenting in week 11 or week 12.

Writing an Executive Summary Executive Summaries (ES) are typically found at the beginning of a large document/research paper. The goal of the ES is to summarise the key details and outcomes/findings of the paper. It can be a good idea to find some reports and read through their ES to get a feel for how they should look. It is worth keeping in mind that an ES is one of the last parts of a report written – it summaries the entire report (and thus doesn’t necessarily show all the fine details of the work you have done). It is important to find the right balance of enough evidence to support your claim and keeping to the word limit. This means the writing style is very important. Writing clearly and succinctly is an important skill for the Job Market – both public and private sectors. Make sure you leave plenty of time to re-read and edit your work to the correct word limit – penalties apply for going over the word limit; anything beyond 10% more than 600 words will not be read by the markers, and thus won’t contribute to your grade (and given the final part of this report is very important for demonstrating your understanding of the material in ECON1101 – this could have a big impact on your mark). Given this is ECON1101 – I’m more than happy for graphs/tables to be included in the ES – just remember, if you include a graph or table, you also need to talk about that graph or table in the text. Some key (suggested) steps for your ES: • Describe the issue/problem you are looking at o For your assignment, this is mostly where you will do part (a) of the question o This will probably take up 100-200 words • State your answer/conclusion o This should be brief (i.e. 50 words) • Support your conclusion with key data/analysis/theory o this is where the bulk of part (b) will come in o Suggested word limit is around 350-450 words
