Topics Memo Assignment for upcoming Internal Research Proposal ...

Description

Topics Memo Purpose: To accurately assess your areas of expertise; to identify problems that you could reasonably address given your current knowledge and authority; and to effectively communicate those potential problems to your supervisor. Assignment Instructions: For this assignment, you should think of at least three viable projects to propose for your 210 Portfolio, then pitch them in a memo. I will offer feedback and select the most viable topic. This will then become the focus of your Internal Research Proposal and, ultimately, your Recommendation Report. You will submit your proposal to TurnItIn (through eCampus). Assignment Components: 1. Compose a properly formatted memo addressed to me. Refer to Technical Communication 376-378 for proper memo format. 2. Within that memo, list at least three possible topics, explaining each in a paragraph of approximately 100 words. In each paragraph, mention: a. The need or opportunity you would be researching b. The audience to whom you would address your proposal c. Your qualifications for researching this need or opportunity 3. Present your topics in order of perceived potential; the first topic you list should be the one you would most like to do and you consider most viable. Keep the Internal Research Proposal assignment guidelines, chapter 16 of Technical Communication, and the “Proposal” section from the Handbook in mind as you brainstorm ideas for topics. Assignment Tips: Parameters. Your topic should be ● Inspired by experiences in your department, work-place, campus organization, church group, or other local community. You or someone close to you should be internal to the organization or community. ● Manageable to research within a single semester but not overly simplistic. o If you would need months to gather adequate information for the Recommendation Report, for instance, the project is unmanageable. o If you can find everything you need by poking around Google for a few hours, the project is overly simplistic. ● Feasible to research. You should be able to access the information and sources you need in order to research your topic. Considerations. Pick a topic that is: ● Familiar to you ● Something you are excited and passionate about ● Reasonable, arguable, and practical ● Previously overlooked ● Useful. Think about changes, improvements, new services, or needs of particular groups....
