April 2nd , 2019 To: Ms. Bailey From: Katelyn Gladstone Subject: Informative Memo for Oral Individual Presentation Dear Ms. Bailey, I chose to do my Individual Oral Report on a data and security breach that happened in 2015 to the company Vtech. This event was eye opening to parents everywhere when it comes to smart toys, and their personal security. Below I have wrote the main points I will be addressing during the presentation.

Background Vtech is a Hong Kong based brand that manufactures and sells digital toys for children, as well as cordless phones. It is one of the top 50 electronic brands that is a global supplier for electronic learning products. It’s products consist of smart watches and tablets that require parents to make a profile for them and their children.

Situation The VTech customer database contains “general user profile” information that was hacked on November 15, 2015 by a single hacker whose main goal was to just expose the companies wrongful practices. He published a story of the data breach on “motherboard” which is a technology news site in order to inform consumers and other people in the tech community about the wrongdoings of the company. He was, within a week, able to access 6.4 million children profiles and 4.8 million adult profiles. Outcome Vtech violated COPPA (children's privacy protection act) by not protecting data of children under 13. Sensitive data was hacked including photographs, gener, age, home address,etc. The company also was charged with “failure to monitor unauthorized attempts to ultrafiltrate personnel” and was charged 65,000 by the FTC. The company was also restricted from trading on the Hong Kong Stock exchange and had to change their system to encrypt data and protect their consumers under COPPA.
