ENG Prospects in Environmental Engineering

My name is Leann Wishah. I am an Environmental Engineering major with a specific interest in the Natural Sciences and Geography. I appreciate the different types of software used to perform different types of Environmental Engineering work. For example, Environmental Engineers use different types of software to track data, implement measurements and begin planning projects. The software used include: Matlab, ArcMap10 and the GIS software. Environmental Engineers in this area of the field write analyses, progress reports and proposals for upcoming projects using the data obtained from the mentioned software. I do often read engineering pieces. It’s usually 2-3 times a week depending on what articles pass by me on a weekly basis. I flag the Engineering, tech and sciences pages on my social media and on the news website I use. It’s because of pages like these that I am able to expand my new found knowledge on topics like Virtual Reality, auto motives and the Greenhouse Effect. A few well-renowned professional organization in my field include the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP). The WEF is a non-profit organization that provides technical education and training for thousands of water quality professionals. The AEESP was founded in 1963 and is made up of 700 professors in academic programs throughout the world who provide education in tech and science regarding environmental protection. An example of a scholarly publication in my field would be the “American Journal of Environmental Engineering”. (http://www.sapub.org/journal/aimsandscope.aspx?journalid=1125). The journal provides an interdisciplinary approach to the practice and status of research in Environmental Engineering Sciences. It contains contributions from consultants, engineers and researchers. Unfortunately, UF does not carry this particular journal but they do carry many similar ones. An example of a trade publication in my field that I regularly read is the “Environmental Science and Engineering Magazine” (ESE Mag). (https://esemag.com/). The magazine covers new concerning my field and has covered Canada’s wastewater and environmental protection sectors for 30 years. The articles are written by leading environmental companies, engineers and scientists. They cover a wide-range of environmental issues. UF does carry the magazine through its e-journals. There are many blogs in my field. Although I previously hadn’t read any of these blogs, the following few have grabbed my attention: “Green Technology” (http://www.greentechnolog.com/) and the “Environmental Engineering Blog” (http://environmentalengineeringblog.com/). The Green Technology blog contains very intriguing posts displaying ways in which engineering is being applied to make our world a lot greener. The Environmental Engineering blog takes a look at a wide variety of issues that Environmental Engineers help resolve on a daily basis.

As the issues surrounding fuel efficiency and emissions become more and more important the popularity of hybrid and electric cars in developed countries has risen. Due to this, Mechanical and Environmental Engineers have started working together to develop these new cars. For example, Toyota recently added Environmental Engineers to its hybrid team. Toyota has introduced HEV’s (Hybrid-electric vehicles) that use both combustion engines and electric motors in order to yield better gas mileage than standard cars while simultaneously reducing emissions. If we continue on this path with other automobiles, we’ll be paving a clean, green path for our future generations.
