Genesis Duarte POLS 400 Dr. Hager H.R.975- Respect State Marijuana Laws Act of 2017
The bill being presented would prevent the federal government from prosecuting individuals and or businesses who use state-sanctioned marijuana; this would mean that anyone or business that is in possession of the substance, uses it, the production of said substance and or the distribution of marijuana would not be prosecuted. o People would not be protected from criminal prosecutions so long as they followed their state’s law regarding marijuana. o 29 state that have already permitted for either medical and or the use of recreational use would not have to worry about deferral officials prosecuting them.
CBO has not scored the bill. Reasons to co-sponsor the bill: o It is a bipartisan bill, meaning that both democrats and republicans see that there is a need for this bill to be passed. o In response to the medical marijuana industry, this will allow for patients to be able to use said substance without the fear of being criminally prosecuted. o A large number of democrats from California have already signed on. o By signing on to the bill this will help protect people in the states where marijuana is legal and thus bringing a safer environment.
