Interpersonal communication CH 4.1 The process of perception

What is perception ? ●

It is the process of making meaning from the things we experience in the environment



Applying perception to people and relationships it is called interpersonal perception

Three stages of perception process ●

Selection ○

1st step



Sense are stimulated by objects and events in the environment



Impossible to pay attention to every sense at a single moment



You engage in selection = mind and body help you choose certain stimuli to pay attention to

You don't make conscious decisions about which stimuli to notice and ignore



3 characteristic make a stimuli stand out : ■

Intensity



Organization ○

Organization is the process of categorizing information that has been selected for attention



4 types of schema to classify info ■

Physical constructs = objective characteristics (height , age ) , subjective characteristics ( physical attractiveness)

Role constructs = emphasizes people’s social or professional position



Interaction constructs = emphasizes people’s behavior



Psychological constructs = emphasizes people’s thoughts and feelings

Perceptual schema helps to see how people are similar and different from us

Interpretation ○

3rd step



Assigning an interpretation is assigning meaning to the info that has been selected for attention and organized



3 factors that help interpret ■

Experience = helps assign meaning to behavior



Knowledge = helps assign meaning to action



Closeness = influences how you interpret behavior

Three steps of perception is not always linear but overlap

Influences on perceptual accuracy ●

Physiology ○

Physiological states are temporary conditions



Physiological traits are conditions that affect us on a ongoing basis



Everyone has different biological rhythm

Cultural and co cultural backgrounds ○

Culture influences perceptions and interpretations of people’s behavior



Co-cultural perceptions influence perceptions



Each person has multiple lens through which they perceive the world ■

These lens are influence by age, culture ,social class , hobbies , co-culture



Social roles ○

Social role is a set behaviors expected from someone in a particular social situation

Each plays different social roles such as gender roles
