WELCOME Welcome to the unit HPS203 The Human Mind. As your Unit Chair, I hope that you will find this unit both intellectually stimulating and relevant to your studies in your current course and your future directions as a Deakin graduate.

You may need to contact me as the Unit Chair at some stage during this trimester. Most communication will be via the discussion boards in CloudDeakin but for personal matters or in an emergency, you may need to contact me directly; m contact details are below. As we are a unit-team based unit, it will be myself, or one the team members responding to e-mail. This unit presents a broad coverage of theories proposed by psychologists to explain the processes by which humans a store, communicate, and use knowledge or information; the various research methods used by psychologists to study t processes; and some classic experimental findings in cognitive psychology which are the cornerstones of these theories Topics covered in the unit include object recognition, attention, memory, reasoning, decision-making and problem-solv These topics are treated within an information-processing approach to human cognition.

Unit development in response to student feedback

Every trimester, we ask students to tell us, through eVALUate, what helped and hindered their learning in each unit. Yo strongly encouraged to provide constructive feedback for this unit when eVALUate opens (you will be emailed a link). In previous versions of this unit, students have told us that these aspects of the unit have helped them to achieve the learning outcomes:

changed the seminars from 1 hour per week to two hours per fortnight provided multiple resources for each topic

ASSESSING YOUR ACHIEVEMENT OF THE UNIT LEARNING OUTCOMES Summative assessments Deakin has a universal assessment submission time of 8:00pm AEDT/AEST. A late penalty will apply to assessments submitted after 11:59pm AEDT/AEST. (tasks that will be graded or marked)

NOTE: It is your responsibility to keep a backup copy of every assignment where it is possible (e.g. written/digital re essays, videos, images). In the unusual event that one of your assignments is misplaced, you will need to submit the ba copy.
