Abel, M. (2019). Long-Run Effects of Forced Resettlement: Evidence from Apartheid South Africa. The Journal of Economic History, 79(4), 915-953. doi:10.1017/s0022050719000512 Martin Abel is an assistant professor at Harvard University. He teaches courses in microeconomic theory and the economics of discrimination. He’s conducted field experiments that focused on information asymmetries and discrimination in labor markets. Mr. Abel also cooperated with the South African government as well as that of Saudi Arabia. His focus was on how to improve employment prospects of unemployed youths and women. There does not seem to be any bias present because his focus is strictly on the economic factor caused by years of forced resettlement due to Apartheid. Martin Abel uses data from his research to prove that the long-term effects of what is considered one of history’s largest social engineering exercises better known as Apartheid. Martin wants to show that the former resettlement communities now have higher levels of social capital than surrounding communities based on the levels of trust and crime. The results are much larger for those who were born after 1975 and were not present for the forced removals. Even though the effects persist, they are not the result of resettlement.

The areas of resettlement have proven to be more ethnically diverse as well as having a diversity that are positively correlated with measures of social capital in areas only affected by relocation. Martin believes that the relocation communities have higher levels of social capital even though there’s the potential short-term conflict over resources exist. He believes the formation of new support networks and the adoption of a shared identity as displaced people is the reason why. The author is using statistics based on the data collected 5 to 15 years after the end of apartheid. The source provides background on the ramifications of apartheid in direct relation to those areas where Black South Africans were forced to relocate.
