Introduction:

3 Idiots hit the untouched bars of Indian Hindi Cinema in the year

This case study shows the development of characters through motivation, that really motivation works in one’s life to accomplish goal and have a clear vision of life. The characters have been categorized on basis of their needs and placed on the Maslow’s hierarchy needs of theory. The movie revolves around 7 main characters with Aamir Khan (Rancho) being the main protagonist who lives in the real self and acts as an influencer for all the characters involved in the film. One’s life is full of struggle & sacrifices. People tend to put effort and hard work for unnecessary things that are not relevant to them and start creating mayhem in their life. They forget to live their life between all this, while fulfilling the expectations of everyone’s either be it family, society or peer. Several characters in the movie show the same behavior as they were living for their status in the society, having the burden of fulfilling others expectations not knowing what their real self is, what they really wanted, always being the ideal-self trying to live life what society and their surrounding preferred to be right. Self-actualization is a very important stage to achieve for everyone then only you can realize who you really are, you can’t always be living your life by the thoughts of others. Why not become the very “change” we want in others to change and have a clear perception of reality and live a life worth remembering.

The characters evolved throughout the movie and had a change in their characteristics if compared to who they were at the initials of the movie. The motive of the movie according to us was that, “Life is not a race, everyone has a different own

Why this case for Motivation? We choose this Case i.e. 3 Idiots for motivation because this movie is the epitome of Motivation, how the process of motivation works in one’s life. This movie relates to the reality of student life how they go through different stages of life, taking the burden of the expectation of our society, how parents mostly care about their social status and force them to pursue something they never want to. This movie was relatable to every viewer and that was the very reason for its success. Once in everyone’s life they face a situation where they need to be motivated as not everyone is capable of having clarity of their life, they need to be motivated and directed. Several characters had different needs and problems in their life living in their ideal self but when being motivated by an optimistic personality who has self-actualized himself they had a total change over in their later life. He not only verbal motivated them her showed his success as an example that how having a real self of yourself can make you successful, it’s the excellence you seek not success rest success will follow you own your own. And the crux for choosing this case is because this movie motivated us personally with its motive on how to perceive life and live a fulfilled life.

Case Analysis We have analyzed the movie and brought out all the seven main characters and placed them on Maslow’s need theory as per their need. Later Real self and Ideal self has been explain in regards to the case and finally what this teaches us, the takeaways. The following characters have been defined in the following syntax:  About character and their needs. (Pre-Motivation)  The process of their motivation. (Motivation Process)  The development of their personality after motivation. (Post-Motivation)

Maslow’s Hierarchal needs of Theory

The following figure shows the Maslow’s hierarchal table which starts from Physiological needs to self-actualization.

The Maslow motivation theory is one of the best known and most influential theories on workplace motivation. Psychologist Abraham Maslow first developed his famous theory of individual development and motivation in the 1940’s. He suggested that human beings have a hierarchy of needs. That is, that all humans act in a way which will address basic needs, before moving on to satisfy other, so-called higher level needs. Maslow represented this theory as a hierarchical triangle. This shows how basic needs must be met before one can “climb” the hierarchy, to address more complex needs. For example, first one must meet the basic, physiological need for food, water and warmth. After that the focus would be on the need to be safe, then the need to belong to social groups, and so on up the hierarchy. The Maslow motivation theory is typically represented by 5 steps:  Physiological needs  Safety needs  Social needs  Esteem needs  Self-actualization

3

Physiological Needs These refer to basic physical needs, such as drinking when thirsty or eating when hungry. According to Maslow, some of these needs involve our efforts to meet the body’s need that is, hunger, thirst, etc. Maslow considered physiological needs to be the most essential of our needs. If someone is lacking in more than one need, they’re likely to try to meet these physiological needs first. For example, if someone is extremely hungry, it’s hard to focus on anything else besides food. The character of MM is played by Rahul Kumar. The character lives his life motivated for basic needs. His only need was survival doing whatever chores he can. His basic needs were food, shelter, clothes, money to survive and education to grow in his life. But due to financial reason, he couldn’t move forward in his life and stayed static in his life. His character pre-motivation can be defined as someone who was motivated for the very basic things, confused in his life & didn’t have any life goal. He was motivated to move forward in his life when Rancho sent him a letter with a ticket in it to pursue his study and make his life better. Later when rancho friends meet

His character post-motivated is an evolved version of his earlier self as motivated, goal oriented & having clear vision of his life.

him in pursuit of finding their lost friend, he seemed totally unknown to them after being apart from them for so many years and…

Safety & Security Needs Once people’s physiological requirements are met, the next need that arises is a safe environment. Our safety needs are apparent even early in childhood, as children have a need for safe and predictable environments and typically react with fear or anxiety when these needs are not met. Raju Rastogi was played by Sharman Joshi. The character of Raju was portrayed as a person who depends on Gods, lived in fear and only motivation for him was fear. It was shown in the movie that he wears a lot of rings symbolizing his different goals/needs in life: one for good marks in exams, sister’s marriage, and one for a job. Pre-motivation he was scared, lived in fear, was passionate and hardworking but didn’t

have the clarity to perceive his goal.

Later when he was motivated by Rancho at different situations by helping his father, manipulating the script of Chatur’s (Silencer’s) speech, helping him get over his fear after his suicide attempt.

Post-motivation he was a totally different individual which could be seen during the placement interview where he showed his actualization of his self. “I’ll sure do something good for myself, it took me a lot to stand up after breaking myself. I’ll keep my attitude you can keep your job.”

Love & Social Needs According to Maslow, the next need in the hierarchy involves feeling loved and accepted. This need includes both romantic relationships as well as ties to friends and family members. It also includes our need to feel that we belong to a social group. Importantly, this need encompasses both feeling loved and feeling love towards others.

The character of Farhan was played by R. Madhavan. Instead of being an engineer, he wanted to be a wildlife photographer. He wanted to work beside Alfred “surname” and be his assistant. But he needed to convince his dad first who had already put his mind that Farhan would become an engineer since the very first day Farhan was born. Though he had a passion for wildlife photography, he pursued engineering to appease his dad. The character of Piya is played by Kareena Kapoor. Having grief over the death of his brother, her relations were not good with his father as she thought he was the reason for the loss of her brother. She suppressed her wants of love and compassion and was engaged to someone she didn’t even want to. Later she met Rancho and developed feelings towards him. Pre-motivation they were in need of affection, recognition, and acceptance from their fathers, pursuing something they didn’t want for Farhan was engineering instead of photography and for Pia it was marrying to someone she didn’t even have feelings for. Rancho motivated Farhan throughout the movie with different statements but the most important was the bet that he made within 3 of themselves & Pia was moved by the thoughts of Rancho, how he was there for his friends and he was able to understand her emotions. Post-motivation they were happy about their change of decisions & were confident.

FARHAN CHATUR

Esteem Needs Our esteem needs involve the desire to feel good about ourselves. According to Maslow, esteem needs include two components. The first involves feeling selfconfidence and feeling good about oneself. The second component involves feeling valued by others; that is, feeling that our achievements and contributions have been recognized by other people. When people’s esteem needs are met, they feel confident and see their contributions and achievements as valuable and important. However, when their esteem needs are not met, they may experience feelings of inferiority. Feeling superior to others and to make others realize that they are inferior to him this character of Chatur aka Silencer played by Omi Vaidya lived his life on esteem needs. The character of Principal aka VIRUS is played by Boman Irani. Having a character of domination & superiority. Being the principal of the college he used to dominate his surroundings and thought himself as superior to others. Pre-motivation they can be described as someone affected by social status, what others think about them, feeling superiority and making others feel inferior and low on emotions. VIRUS developed when Rancho helped his grandson take birth and for the first time, he mentioned something besides Engineering & Doctor and considered Rancho as a bright student. Post-motivation he was self-actualized & had better interpersonal relationships.

VIRUS

Even though till the end Chatur couldn’t develop he still remained the same but eventually he realized the worth of real-self when he get to know that who he chasing was no one else but the one who he used to thought as of inferior to him.

Self-Actualization Self-actualization refers to feeling fulfilled, or feeling that we are living up to our potential. One unique feature of self-actualization is that it looks different for everyone. For one person, self-actualization might involve helping others; for another person, it might involve achievements in an artistic or creative field. Essentially, self-actualization means feeling that we are doing what we feel we are meant to do. Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad a.k.a “Rancho” was played by Aamir Khan. His character in the movie was not just being a genius among them but also he’s the optimistic one. He was not scared of doing what he thinks is right. It may seem hard at first because no one will hardly support you of your decisions in life but it doesn’t mean that what the society dictates, or even what our parents want us to do will shape our future. Yes, they may know what’s good for us but we also know what we want. And what we want will lead us not just to success but also to our life’s fulfillment. Being the very reason for everyone’s motivation and growth he was the One Above All. It was even recognized by his surroundings which can be seen by the lyrics of the song Behti Hawa SA Tha WO…

(We used to walk on paths while he made paths for himself), Girta sambhalta masti mein chalta tha wo (He used to fall down, then get up, & walk around in excitement), Hum ko kal ki fikar sataati who bas aaj ka jashan manaata (We used to be tensed for tomorrow, while he used to enjoy today completely), Har lambhe ko khul ke jeeta tha wo… (He used to live every moment fully).

9

Behti hawa SA tha WO, udti patang sat ha WO (He was like the flowing breeze, he was like the flying kite), Hum KO to raahein thi chalaati woh khud apni raah banaata His famous dialogues were also one the most important factors for the motivation like, “All is well”, “A circus lion is called well trained not well educated, seek excellence & success will follow”.

Real & Ideal Self The real self is who we actually are. It is how we think, how we feel, look, and act. The real self can be seen by others, but because we have no way of truly knowing how others view us, the real self is our self-image. The character Rancho was in real self, he knew what his goals were didn’t live as per the norms or rules & regulations made by his surroundings. The ideal self, on the other hand, is how we want to be. It is an idealized image that we have developed over time, based on what we have learned and experienced. The ideal self could include components of what our parents have taught us, what we admire in others, what our society promotes, and what we think is in our best interest. All the characters besides Rancho were having an Ideal Self living up to other's

expectations, affected by different social factors and had positive regards when something was in their favor but couldn’t handle the criticism towards them.
