Description

Etiquette Violation Honor’s system

Why so? “Terry decides to hit off the tee first because he arrived to the tee area first.” -

Whoever got the lowest score on the previous hole has the honour of hitting first. In this scenario if Terry had the lowest score this would be ok but it is not specified in the case

Profanity “He hit his ball way off into the trees (out of bounds) and swears loudly” -

Golf is a prestigious sport in which manners and etiquette are key. Profanity is unacceptable and terry should try to maintain calm and practise positive self-talk.

Silence while hitting “begins to verbally tease his friend about his lofty score on the last hole. He quits this once all the players in their group of five have taken their first shot.” -

On the golf course it goes against etiquette to be talking as someone is swinging as it will distract them and possibly cause a miss-hit

-

In addition groups in golf should not exceed 4 players per group. However being in a gym class it might have been an issue of time

Ball out of bounds “Upon arriving at the point of entry into the woods of his first shot he climbs over a fence to access the out-of-bounds area that his ball had entered. He looks for seven minutes and finally decides to give up finding his ball when players waiting to tee off behind him ask him to hurry up. He tosses a new ball into the middle of the fairway and strikes his next shot with all of the others in his group now waiting for him on the green” -

A ball out of bounds must be left , a stroke is added and a ball is usually either dropped in a specific area for drops or another tee shot is taken . in addition, this will have saved time as he would not have checked for his ball out of bounds and it will have prevented the other group from waiting behind them. It is always best to spend a max of 1 min looking and if you can’t find your ball to move on.

Self-control “His shot careens off a tree and into a sand trap near the green so he throws his golf club up and forward half-way to the green in anger.” -

It is important on the golf course to keep composure and maintain respect. A good way for terry to fix this is to try positive self-talk in order to refrain from acts of frustration

Sand trap etiquette “He takes a few practice swings in the sand trap carving out a divot in the sand on each one.” -

In a sand trap, you are not to take practise swings that touch the surface of the sand and make divots. In order to fix this terry should try choking up on the club taking practise swings which are about 6-8 inches above the surface of the sand

Green etiquette “Another player farther from the cup is waiting to putt but he walks over the projected line of that players shot and shoots his putt but misses so he strikes it again before it stops rolling and it finally enters the cup.” -

The person farthest from the pin putts first. In this case terry did not respect the system of play

-

Additionally terry walked across another players line which can sometimes leave bumps and imprints which can affect the put as it rolls. To prevent this terry should take a route to his ball which does not interfere with the line of another players putt

Green etiquette “shoots his putt but misses so he strikes it again before it stops rolling and it finally enters the cup. He announces that he has earned a score of four (par) and walks off to the next tee before the others have finished putting.” -

Terry should have waited until all players have finished

putting -

Terry should wait until the ball has fully come to a complete stop before striking his ball again

-

Terry theoretically could not have scored a 4 as his first shot went out of bounds adding a penalty stroke in addition to the 5 strokes he made.

2. Provide the correct answer to each of the following fill in the blank questions about golf. /2 (.5 deducted per error) 1. Call “____fore____” if your ball is dangerously heading toward other players. 2. The person with the _____lowest______ score on the preceding hole tees off first. 3. The player _____furthest _____ from the hole should shoot first during play (after the tee shot). 4. The putting surface is called the ____green_______. 5. A penalty of __1__ stroke(s) is counted when a ball is hit into a pond. 6. A score of two under par for a par 4 or 5 hole is called an _____eagle _______. 7. 3. Explain what is done in “direct instruction” relative to each of the instructional features provided in column A (see lecture 1 notes). In column B, describe what was done in lab 2 (teaching golf in a PE and/or recreational setting) to model those features. /4

Explanation of some of How it was modeled in Lab 2 the vital features of Direct Instruction

Clearly and accurately present/model skills

-

Clearly outlined Safety concerns and hazards Modeled skills and aspects of a swing that are important Asked the class many questions in order to promote learning through discovery and inquiry

Provide plenty of practise

-

Enforced meaningfulness

-

Didn’t over teach - Went over safety and basics to get us started and allowed us to explore i.e. Learning through exploration Allowed for ample time to discover and practise the skills learned as they were new, and we were given lots of time to explore the for some foreign movements Individual feedback given to each student to allow for improvement regardless of skill level Prevention of over teaching and focusing on one skill at a time Got into partners to assist peer constructive feedback and allow for more direct constructive feedback Right and left clubs provided One handed swing Some students weren’t able to golf at the same time so some went to a putting station so they could be active at the same time as everyone else

-

Provide ample constructive feedback

-

Adapt based on need
