Context for You will be working as a team to run a Golf Course for the next six weeks. This Assignment: assignment has been designed to bring you through a variety of stages of reflection and activity, both as a team and individually in your respective roles for the simulation. You’ll be making decisions in the various functional areas of business within the Golf Course. While your performance in managing the Golf Course is important, the bulk of the grades will be given to the work you do as you make business decisions, and your collaboration within the team. Your Teaching Assistant will provide you with at least an hour, if not more, during each Time Provided for tutorial between the weeks of Sept. 23 rd to Oct. 23rd to work on the simulation as a team. Work: You may also need to plan for additional time outside of the tutorial to meet the deliverables of the assignment. Learning Objectives for Assignment

1. To understand how the functional areas of a business are inter-related and the impact of the decisions made by various team members on the success/failure of a company. 2. To be able to synthesize business information to make informed decisions in the best interest of a company. 3. To use verbal and written communication skills to make, and communicate, business decisions, both internally and externally within a company.

Deliverables: There are TWO types of deliverables for this assignment:

1) Team Deliverables – where the work is to be collaborated on as a team and submitted as a team (i.e. one paper submitted on behalf of the entire team). 2) Individual Deliverables – where the work is to be done individually and handed in separately from the team deliverables (i.e. each person on the team must complete the individual deliverables by the designated timelines and submit individually).

APPENDIX: Praxar Management Golf Simulation Phases STEP 1 - Preparation Phase 1. Purchase the simulation (by Sept. 15 th at the latest - as soon as possible is recommended). 2. Once logged into the simulation, you are required to individually go through the PREPARATION phase of the simulation. Here you will click on Access the Tutorial and complete the brief quiz affiliated with the section. 3. Once you have completed the Access the Tutorial section, click on Access the Practice Zone section of Preparation and complete, ON YOUR OWN, at least ONE round of the simulation. You may do this as many times as you like before the deadline (Sept. 21 st) but you must complete at least one round. This is all done online in the simulation and there is no written deliverable required.

Step 2 – Simulation 4. Use the Schedule of Deliverables in the Appendix as a guide for completing the simulation as a team from week to week. You will only be able to complete one YEAR in each week with 5 years total in the simulation, as well as a TEST YEAR (between Sept. 23-28 th) 5. Complete the assigned deliverables as assigned by your Instructor by the deadlines.

Step 3 - Evaluation 6. Once the final team deliverables have been completed, you will click on the Evaluation section of the simulation on Access the Evaluation. ON YOUR OWN, you will complete the 360 Degree Assessment and the final Questionnaire. See the Schedule of Deliverables in the Appendix for the deadlines to complete these phases, including your final Reflection Memo.

APPENDIX: The Management Team and Individual Roles There are 5 key roles on the Management Team for each Golf Course, which means that there will be 5 members on each team. You will remain in your assigned teams from the tutorials but it will be up to your team to make a decision about who will be in which role for the simulation. Be sure to discuss your respective skills, strengths, interests and desire for learning, as you make decisions about who will play which role. You will be ROLE PLAYING (i.e. assuming the role of a character and for all assignments, unless otherwise noted, you are always submitting assignments/reporting as if you are in character for the role you will be playing). You can remain in these roles for the ENTIRETY of the simulation OR you can change roles but if you do, it cannot be done until AFTER the completion of Year 2. General Manager (GM)  The GM reports directly to the Chair of the Board (CoB). All formal memos and correspondence from the GM should be directed to the CoB. The GM receives targets and proposed strategies from the CoB for the year ahead and is then responsible for ensuring that all members of the Management Team (MT)* are clear on the goals and targets for the coming year. It is recommended that the GM make time each year (week) to ensure that the MT is clear on their priorities for the coming year, including any budgetary, environmental and social constraints or targets.  The GM is responsible for submitting the FINAL DECISIONS of the team for each year. This includes meeting with and/or discussing the recommendations from each member of the MT and ensuring that their respective decisions are in line with the overall objectives. Assistant Manager (AM)  The AM supports the work of the GM. Many of their key roles and responsibilities are related to the overall operations of the organization, with a specific focus on key financial/budgetary concerns, staffing/hiring needs and operational efficiencies.  Each year (week), the AM will present the GM with a summary of their advice for how to proceed for the year ahead and this advice will come with recommendations, key decisions to be made, draft budget, etc. The GM will review this information and discuss any concerns/changes that may arise before submitting the final decisions for the year. Golf Course Superintendent (GCS)  The GCS is responsible for all things related to Golf Course Management including day-to-day maintenance and on-going upkeep of the course.  Each year (week), the GCS will present the GM with a summary of their advice for how to proceed for the year ahead and this advice will come with recommendations, key decisions to be made, draft budget, etc. The GM will review this information and discuss any concerns/changes that may arise before submitting the final decisions for the year. Head Golf Professional (HGP)  The HGP is responsible for the management of the Pro Shop. This includes teaching golf, being the public face of the business and oversight of all activities in the pro-shop. The pro-shop and its services are considered a profit-centre that should generate revenue.



Each year (week), the HGP will present the GM with a summary of their advice for how to proceed for the year ahead and this advice will come with recommendations, key decisions to be made, draft budget, etc. The GM will review this information and discuss any concerns/changes that may arise before submitting the final decisions for the year.

Executive Chef (EC)  The EC is responsible for restaurant management including operations of the kitchen and dining room. The restaurant is considered a profit-centre that should generate revenue.  Each year (week), the EC will present the GM with a summary of their advice for how to proceed for the year ahead and this advice will come with recommendations, key decisions to be made, draft budget, etc. The GM will review this information and discuss any concerns/changes that may arise before submitting the final decisions for the year. *Management Team – General Manager, Assistant Manager, Golf Course Superintendent, Head Golf Professional and Executive Chef. Any other members of the staff hired report directly to the appropriate member of the management team that hired them.

APPENDIX: Deliverables TEAM DELIVERABLE: Memo – Performance Review and Highlights for Year 1 to 3 At the completion of year 3, you must complete a TEAM memo (ONE for the team) that is to be addressed to the Chair of Board from the General Manager with a cc to each member of the team for their respective roles. The subject line should read “Performance Review and Highlights for Year 1-3”. The General Manager is responsible for collating and submitting the final version of the Memo however all team members are required to contribute the content for their respective sections. The body of the business memo should include, but is not limited to, the items below. Charts, graphs or supporting materials can be included in the form of an Appendix if needed. The memo is to be written single spaced and cannot exceed 2500 words total (not including the Appendix). Role General Manager

Items to be included Oversees the entire memo and includes content that addresses:  Overview of performance for period of year 1-3 based on the targets and strategies provided by the Chair of the Board at the start of the simulation, including high level notes to status of shares, break-even/profit, and overall financial status.  Overview of the success of the company with its environmental and social balance sheet results for the year.  Concluding notes/recommendations/decisions to be assessed/considered for the next year. Provide a summary of no less than 250 words and no more than 500 words that addresses:  Significant budget decisions that were made and why (if applicable);  Improvements (or decline) year-over-year for indicators;  Highlight any environmental/sustainable business decisions that were made and why;  Identify greatest challenge for the past year and one key priority for the next year of business, as it relates to your specific responsibilities.

Grade – This assignment is out of 45 and is reflective of 8% of the overall deliverable.

Notes GM is responsible for this section however they can consult with team members regarding the balance sheets and notes/ recommendations for next year if/as needed.

Provide your respective sections to the GM by their required deadline so that they can pull the final memo together.

TEAM DELIVERABLE: Final Report Requirements (Year 4 and 5): The final report will focus on activities from years 4 and 5 and will also include insights and recommendations to the Chair of the Board for next steps for the company. This report should include a cover page with an Executive Summary highlighting key points for the Chair of the Board as well as any supporting information as outlined below. Charts, graphs or supporting materials can be included in the form of an Appendix if needed. The report (not including Appendices) is to be written single spaced and cannot exceed 3000 words total and no less than 2000 words. The General Manager is responsible for submitting the report to the Chair of the Board however all team members are required to contribute to the content of the report. The following items should be included:  Executive Summary  Overview of state of financial affairs of the Golf Course including, but not limited to: o Share value from year 1 to year 5 and any relevant insights, etc. o Income Statement at end of year 5 and any relevant insights, etc. o Revenue Statements at end of year 5 for each Division (Golf Course, Restaurant, Pro-Shop, Restaurant Profit Margin, Pro-Shop Profit Margin) along with any relevant insights, etc. o Balance Sheet at end of year 5 and any relevant insights, etc.  Overview of the success of the company with its environmental and social balance sheet results at the end of year 5. Be sure to not only address the scores in each of the 10 areas on the social balance sheet but include brief note addressing each of the following: o Water Management o Waste Management o Green Space o Wages o Training o OHS & Labour Relations o Donations o Suppliers o Eco-friendly maintenance o Energy Management  Section dedicated to each Management Team member that summarizes key decisions, lessons learned and recommendations for their respective areas moving forward. o Golf Course Superintendent o Assistant Manager o Head Golf Professional o Executive Chef  Final recommendations and insights to the Chair of the Board. Grade – This assignment is out of 60 and is reflective of 12% of the overall deliverable.

INDIVIDUAL DELIVERABLE: Personal Reflection Memo You are required to write a memo that will be addressed to your Instructor for the Course (Julie Caldwell, Instructor BUSI 1800). It will be from you (include your name and student number). CC your Teaching Assistant. The subject line should read “Personal Reflections for Simulation”. The memo is to be written single spaced and cannot exceed 900 words (not including the header of the memo). NO Appendix should be included. The body of the memo should include, but is not limited to, the following:

 The role(s) you played in the simulation. Be sure to include a brief summary of the key roles/responsibilities you had in the role(s) and why you chose the role(s). **NOTE: If you changed roles after year 2, please be sure to speak to why you decided to change roles.  Speak to the importance of communicating between business functions (the areas you were responsible for along with the other functions carried out by your team members i.e. there was often overlap for discussions about marketing, finances, hiring, etc. and what did you learn about these cross-functions).  Share one or two areas that you learned something valuable/positive as it relates to operating a business.  Share one or two challenges that you experienced as it relates to your collaboration with the other members of the Management Team for your Golf Course and how you could have addressed it moving forward (the role playing not your overall team experience i.e. if you were the Executive Chef, where/how did you experience challenges collaborating with your colleagues in other roles in managing the Course).  Provide a concluding statement about your overall experience with the simulation. Grade – This assignment is out of 35 and is reflective of 6% of the overall deliverable....
